When I got back to my car in the car park at Burghley last night, I noticed someone had left their bag and loads of shopping next to it. Initially thought that they had just popped it there and would be back, but after I got in my car and started up, I thought no, someone had forgotten it. Searched through and found the owners business card and phoned her, she had not even realised it was gone! Arranged to drop it all off at The George in Stamford (which was a nightmare as drove around their car park for what seemed like hours trying to find a space), both the receptionist and the lady in question were surprised that I had been so honest, but having had my bag stolen, I know what a nightmare this is. What I do find sad though is that they felt like I was an exception rather than the rule, which begs the question, what would you have done?

I always return anything valuable I find. I am honest to a fault.
I still think I'm destined for hell for other sins, though

Well done you, personally I would have done the same.
I lost my bag once with a lot of cash in it, and it was handed in to the police station with every single penny still in it, and I was so releived that I always told myself I would do the same.
I do actually think a lot of people would be honest as well, because not many would be able to live with the guilt of leaving it or stealing it. I know I couldn't

I don't think anybody is going to admit on here that they would have taken the money and run!!!!! However what I would say is that I would most definitely have returned the goods and purse etc if it had identification in it but would more than likely have kept the stuff if it hadn't! ( Ooohh am I naughty? )

I once did the classic and drove off with my purse on the roof of my car. Didn't even realise I hd done it until a few hours later when someone phoned me to say they had found it on the side of the road! He arranged to meet me and hand it over. All my credit cards were still there but cash was missing

, knowing the area I lost it I suspect some kids had nicked the cash but then chucked away the rest. The cynic of me wondered if it was the guy who found it but seemed unlikely he would bother contacting me if that was the case, I was anyhow very grateful to get the cards back.
In answer to the question, in view of the above I would have contacted the owner if their address was there. Otherwise would probably take the stuff to the organisers, as eventually I am sure the owner would have realised their mistake.

Well you lot have restored my faith in human decency and honesty, seems the majority would have done exactly what I did

I must admit I too would not have been able to face myself in the mirror, if I had just taken it or left it there for someone else to deal with.

I found a bag full of christmas presents left at the bus stop...I got on all the buses that were waiting looking for the owner, nowt. Took a look in the bag to see if there was any info about the owner, just a lot of receipts and goods worth in excess of £400.

In the end, I went into the shop that most of the stuff came from and they looked at me like I was mad (possibly because it was an expensive shop and they were wondering what a pleb like me was doing in there) and they had the womans details and said they would contact her to collect her stuff.

Not one word of thanks, which was nice.

If I could be sure that the proper owner would get it back then I would do everything to get it back to them.....

On the other hand, if there was no chance that it would get back to them.... then I would keep it and advertise in a local paper.

I would not let some third party then be dishonest and benefit from my honesty!!!

I would have done exactly the same as you did! Being totally honest though, if it was just a random bit of cash blowing around on the ground then I would pocket it and not say anything
