I'm planning on doing a ODE on the 20th of september just a wee pony club one but im wanting to do the small class the jumps dont exceed 2ft but the next class up will not exceed 2ft 6 its not the show jumping that im worried about ive been competiting up to 2ft 9 but ive never gone xc before so was thinking i could do the wee one as a first time also Taz is only 5 so i dont want to get a fright for him to back off a bit

any ideas?

Maybe

, but you know your own horse, and if you feel he is not ready, then I would say you are being responsible to youself and your horse.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck

No, and does it really matter?

At the end of the day, hopefully you and Taz will have popped the xc jumps nicely, he'll have gained a good dose of experience and will be looking forwards to the next time out. Better to have a bit of a school round now than be grinding to a halt over a bigger course because he's scared himself.

Have fun

and sod the people who think you look stupid, anyone with an iota of common sense will understand exactly why you are doing it.

You wont look stupid. My experience is that the average ponyclubber is only too well aware of how difficult it can be to start doing somthing like this.I am sure they will respect you for it.

You do what you feel comfortable with - no point scaring yourself and putting yourself off XC.
I did my first SJ class a few months ago. The horse I ride is not much of a confidence giver so I started at 1'9''.
My aim for the class was to stay on the horse (which I achieved) but I did feel a bit mean when I came second, beating a 6 year old on a leadrein! (I'm 30).
I have now progressed up to 2'3" but I still brick it and am still competing against little kids who fly round the course like pro's.
