Just went down to horse with infection on his hock and i am sire it looks more swollen now than it was should i just wait and see what its like by tuesday and ring vet like he said?
If it looks worse, I'd atleast call the vet. Even if he doesn't come out you'd kick yourself if it needs seeing now to save further damage. Hope he's going to be ok.
If he has typical TB legs which I think you said before then it may well continue to swell.
If it is hot, he has a temperature, is more lame or is depressed then I would call tonight.
If it is just swollen then I probably wouldn't worry too much - one of mine swelled right down his leg like a tree trunk after a kick to the thigh - typical TB! It also leaked clear fluid which was serous fluid not joint fluid (cut was not over a joint though).
If you are worried then call for a chat with the vet.
Have you cold hosed it ? - how long has he been stood in - or is he out? does it go down if he is turned out or walked in hand - does it smell - is the injury area itself just hot ? is he on bute or something similar?
Dont worry - he will be fine now he is home - thank god you fetched him home and not left him there
haven't cold hosed it vet just said to put antiseptic spray on it and the wound is still open and he had a big shot of antibiotics this morning, he is turned out as vet said he will be better walking around rather than being stood in his box. It doesn't smell its just clear fluid coming out the injury is on the small bones on the inside of his hock it is just the swollen area that is hot and to think he was going to be going galloping on saturday if i hadn't of brought him home
If it were me - i would cold hose for 20 mins a day morn and night - call vet by all means but i would not ask for another visit until Tue or Wed. Keep him out and if the flies are still in your area put vasaline over the "antiseptic cream or spray". I would only start to panic if the surrounding tissue really started to swell or he became hoping lame. If it was a serious injury to the hock joint I am afraid you would know by now as he would be really really lame. Have you not had any bute perscribed - if he were mine i would have him on either one or two a day - depending on how heavy he is.
Mine had a similar kick a few weeks ago - it took two weeks for it to go down and his swelling had gone all the way down his leg. He had a course of antibiotics and 5 days of bute.
He will be fine - honest and stop beating yourself up about what has gone on - you cant change the past
From what you have said it really doesn't sound that serious.
It's a TB (some blow up at any given oppertunity!) with a cut.
Keep checking for lameness and a raised temperature, if none occur then you are talking a mild infection that will go in a few days when the antibiotics kick in.
If it were mine he'd be in the field moving around and being cold hosed 2-3 times a day. But if you have him in I'd definitely do 2 x 20 mins in hand walking too.
