All going well, Hattie will be put in foal in May and have the baby April 08. Now I would prefer her to foal in the field as she is not very happy in a stable. I have a huge stable she can go in if needs be.
The plan is to put the trailer in the field, nicer than a tent, and stay in that when she is due. With the shogun in case I get cold, the seat go right back so I could sleep in it.
But watching this foal cam, I wouldn't be able to see Hattie unless she is right next to the trailer so would it work using a spot light running on a car battery attached either to the trailer or the field shelter and one in the field shelter in case she decides to foal in there. Obviously I will ask the neighbours if they mind a light on all the time over night, can't be worse than a street light though.
Do you think it will work? It should light up most of the field. I don't really want to shine a torch at her every hour to check she hasn't started yet.

I think the problem with April, is the potential of bad, cold, wet weather and keeping the foal dry and safe. Foals have to build up their systems.

When a mare has foaled it is necessary to keep everything clean because of joint-ill and in a field that could be muddy for the winter that is not going to be possible.

You have got the best part of a year to get her used to the stable, I do think that is your better option. And if there are any problems foaling the vet has facilities and you would not have to move her.

Sorry to put a damp squid on your idea, I just keep coming up with potential problems. Another one that I have just thought of is with stabled mares, they are enclosed with the foal and bonding takes place, if your mare took fright and ran off in the field you would have a big job on your hands.

that sounds a little extreme! I know it's a worrying time and you want to make absolutely sure she's ok, but she could become distressed by the light. I would check her regularly, but as quietly as possible so as not to disturb her.

all my friends welshies foal outside, the broodmares are a bit feral and get stressed in a stable!! she does have boxes availible for emergencies etc but in 20 years of breeding has had very few problems, if your mare is a native type i think she would be fine to foal in the field, but for a first foal you may want a may birth as the weather is likely to be better, i wouldn't have too much light as it may upset her just keep a quiet eye on her with a very dim wattage torch.
