Will moving yards be an issue for new horse?

Hello,

I'm planning to buy my first horse (in many years) early next year, however have also decided to sell my house and move location. The sensible me thinks I should wait to get the horse until I move so he/she won't need to be relocated. But, I'm ready to buy my new equine friend and have no idea how long it will take to sell my house and find a new one. I'd rather not have to relocate a settled horse to a new yard, but am I overthinking this?!

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I think you are over thinking it.
Horses get moved on for various reasons, from selling, yard closure, yard changing rules, yard not suiting horse, owners moving for work etc.
You've obviously been thinking this through for a long time as your posts 4 years ago and more recently ask about getting a horse, maybe you'll know when the time is right?

I would wait. Selling your house and buying another can be very time consuming and stressful and finding a new horse and settling it can be time consuming and stressful. Doing both at the same time could be a lot.

Once you are settled in your new house you will have time to dedicate to finding the right horse.

i moved mine after about 3 weeks, she settled again no bother - she’s a “worrier” but was completely unphased by it all! i think the transition is less stressful for them moving with their owner than to a new home.

Might be, might not be. Some of them take a long time to settle, some of them truly couldn’t care less!

Knowing how stressful house moving is, I think I’d try and get that done first. And trying to move house with horses is a whole other level of stress.

Yes I think you're probably right. Probably the most sensible thing to do. I'd hate to find a perfect yard and have a settled horse, only to have to up sticks and move him/her. I'll try being more patient....!

Yes I think I've come to that decision to be honest. I think realistically selling/buying/moving will be potentially stressful enough, and with this being my first horse in a long time, I want to make sure everything runs as smoothly as it can when I get him/her (well, as smoothly as buying horses can be!)

That's true, they do... maybe I am overthinking it - and yes I have been planning for this for a while! A few road blocks have cropped up along the way unfortunately, and I've gone down the sharing route for the past few years to a) make sure it's what I really want to do, and b) to help me save up in the meantime!
