I normally hunt every week in the winter but I'm not sure I have enough money to hunt at all this year.. and if I do it will only be once a month, maybe twice.

My mums horse is lame and out at grass so I'm wondering if I should let him have a break and chuck him out with him for a couple of months?? Or should I struggle on and try and keep him fit enough for hunting every now and then?? Another alternative is I could keep him ticking over and do the odd bit of BSJA when i feel like it and forget about hunting for now.

Another problem is if I turn him out my mum will probably cry because I won't be giving her any money... but I'll have a lot more!

What would you do??

Why will you not be giving your mum money if you turn yours out with hers???

Would you not enjoy keeping your horse ticking over anyway?? Do you only ride to hunt, or do you get enjoyment from riding?

Well my mum looks after Badger and obviously if he was turned out 24/7 I wouldn't give her as much money in livery for looking after him because she wouldn't be doing a great deal.

I would rather have him tucked in bed for the winter I guess, I can't ride in the week in the winter due to work/light so it I'm just thinking it will be a masive struggle to keep him hunting fit if he's not really hunting.

He is fairly fit now, so I might do a bit of cubbing, opening meet and then let him have a bit of chill time and just ride him on weekends and when mum feels like a hack in the week. That way if, come december I'm suddenly not poor, it wouldn't be that hard to get him fitter agian.

Thanks for your reply.

Well, that would be ideal, but she can't afford to hunt either!!

I'm not sure she would anyway though, she doesn't mind hacking him but she finds him a bit big and strong for her, and she says he looks too scary cos he is a bit fast into his fences, she's used to her lovely Caffrey so she's a fussy bugger!!!

I would turn him away then, there is no point in making yourself totally skint or even in light work and give your mum abit of money for that then she is still riding. You will then be ok doing some BSJA when you want and when you have money. Id be fussy been used to Caffrey he has always been a dude

I'd chuck him out for a holiday, and give your mum a bit for keeping an eye on him or whatever else she does for him/you. Without wanting to sound totally heartless, it's better to save some up for yourself, and if she wanted to the extra time she'll have would mean she could get a part-time job or something, which would possibly pay better anyway!
btw, for horses living out 24/7 all winter, I don't think you can beat FAL rugs, they are awesome!

Do you remember Caffrey Dingle??

Thanks for the offer brighteyes!

I don't think I could cope with letting anyone have him for a bit though... I get a bit jelous... like if my BF went out with another woman!

Yep - that's the one.

He is 12 now... we got him when he was 5... doesn't seem like we've had him that long at all!!!

Hopefully he'll be fighting fit soon!

I have a bit of a similar problem. I really can't afford my hunt sub this year, but I love hunting, my horse loves hunting (and is a FAB hunter). Oh, and my father-in-law is the master so I will be in major family strife if I don't turn out (big, live-breathe-hunting sort of family). I'm at livery on a hunting yard, next door to the kennels and I don't think I'd be able to cope with watching everyone else get ready on a Sat/Tues morning knowing that I can't go!!

I have thought about paying in installments but even if I split the sub up into monthly chunks it would still cancel out the livery fees I've saved by selling my other horse. AAAAArrrgh

Have considered selling my husband into slavery

(or the version known as agricultural contracting - ideal. I send him to his normal job in the daytime then a few extra hours work on a night and all weekend combining/baling/leading straw/ploughing etc.

Trouble is that work will only last another few weeks

What to do???

Oh, and the whole 'your horse doesn't know he's missing out' argument doesn't wash when the hunt kennels are just over the fence. He most certainly DOES know what's going on!

Oh dear - it's even worse for you!! You'll have to go really won't you... at least with my mum not hunting this year I won't feel left out!

If I really fill my belly twice a week at meets (we have some good meets!) do you think I could go without eating for the rest of the week?

BSJA route every time - if you rough him off properly, its amazing how long it takes to get them back supple and to the same standard (although I roughed off for 4 months)

How much does hunting cost anyway?
