a man at my yard has just found out his shetland is in foal :)
although the only suspect is a 14.2 cob :confused::o
no other colts/stallions within a few miles and he has owned her for a few years. he had the vet out today who said she would be due around end of may june time, but could be early due to size of the foal.

it got me thinking....
will there be more problems with this birth because the stallion is alot bigger (titch is 7.2hh) so he is double her size!
what could be the dangers of this birth and pregnancy????
info please xxx thank you for reading xx

A 14.2hh cob got to a 7.2hh shettie? I am surprised she isn't any smaller now!
Joking aside, nature knows best and if the owner can keep a very close eye on her most things all work out well. One thing that he can do in the meantime is not to over feed her as a little fat mare will have more problems.

Actually the more I think about it, I don't even know if that mating could be possible. He would have to have been standing in a big hole or the mare up high for the important 'parts' to reach?!

When I was a University doing Agriculture, I was given an old farm animals handbook written by John Hammond. In it, there was a trial where they inseminated a Shetland mare with Shire semen and a Shire mare with Shetland semen. The outcome was fascinating. The trial is online if you have a spare 10mins to read....

I was scared about foaling because when I bought my Shettie last year (she's approx 34 inches) she was in foal to a sec A but a 14.2hh is a way bigger size difference than that  My mare already had a yearling filly to the same stallion (I bought her too :o ) but I had no idea of how that birth had gone, old owner seemed to have no idea cos tbh the ponies were one step away from the meat man. Anyhoo when Harold arrived it was the quickest easiest foaling I have ever seen (aside from the fact he arrived 2 months later than we were expecting  ). He is 5 months old now and the same height as his Mum, his sister towers over both of them.
Hope it works out ok for the little Shettie :)

There is a pony in Central Scotland called Mr. Giddy, I believe that the Princess Royal presented him with a saddle (?) d/k why. His parentage was Sire Clydesdale Dam Shetland Pony.

He was small about 12hh with a big head and hugely strong. He was used for RDA.
