Tried to keep my girls in at night but they want to be out. Both have Weatherbeeta Axiom rugs but noticed they were letting in a little water before Christmas in one of the three day monsoons.
Is it feasible to buy new lightweight turnout to put over my heavies or will that act like a boil in the bag?
Don't want to have to buy new rugs if poss, and cant afford to have them away 2 weeks being reproofed..
What would you do?

I have layered a lightweight rug over a medium that has seen better days. Both rugs were the same make and design and the lightweight was a size up so I found that the two 'moved as one'. I use fillet straps and not leg straps however, don't think I'd like to try it with 2 sets of legstraps.

Things to watch out for: careful fitting of the rugs, is the horse is ok with double the belly straps, and are both rugs breathable ones.

Mine have lightweight over their warm rugs as the lightweight are cheaper to replace and I have a rug wrecker! Never bothers them and I do like the fact they're always dry underneath

Sorry but a rug that leaks is useless and will need replacing. You cant carry on using it as the horse will effectively be wearing a wet towel. At best you could try a reproofing spray but that will need 24 hrs to dry usually.

Do they actually NEED the rugs? Are they clipped? Do they not have access to ad lib forage?

I dont do more than one rug - I cant imagine how restrictive it must feel to the horse, and given that their own coats are designed to do the job so much better I dont see the point in interfering.

I've never double rugged either, this is the first time i've seen it at the yard i'm at now. Some of them wear up to three.

Neither are clipped, one is 19 years old, TB x ?, an ex polo pony who retired to a happy hacker. She is used to living out every winter with no rug, no feed, no hay & no shoes. This is her first year of rugging, as shes being groomed the oils aren't there but she does have a good thick coat.

My other is a 14 year old full TB, fine but thick coat. She's lived out the last few years (allegedly - bought her last spring)

They've both dropped weight since being in - I didn't want to but had to due to mud fever. They have hard feed and as much as you can eat hay.

If I go down the new rug route weatherbeeta or amigo? Love rambos but cant afford them just now!

Could you just get a rain sheet? My YO put my unclipped horse in his stable with 2 heavyweights on. Not sure how many times she's done that but thank god I went up and changed them, he was sweating horrendous amounts! Just hope she is only leaving one on now..

Whatever make fits them best, I've used both on different horses of different shapes. If you possibly can it's worthwhile having a rug and a spare per horse, day after day of torrential rain like we have had this winter can defeat even the best of rugs. Even our sheltie has two little lightweights and we have needed both this year.

Check out local agri stores and the like to see if you can get a deal particularly if you don't mind having 'last seasons colours' (the horses don't care what colour they are only whether they are comfortable and dry;)).

Unless yours are real rug rippers they should last more than one season.
