i thought having 4 straps is good for wide horses as it balances better?

it may well do.....but having 4 means one is missing...

5 is ok...point and balance and 3 straights girthing straps....

i may well be wrong and have been led to believe the rong thing

i have 2 exactly he same in the tack room...one is less than 6 months old...the other 5 yrs old..both have 5 straps fitted

I haven't even looked at the saddle link..... no way you can buy a saddle to fit like this. You may get lucky, but more likely to be wasting time and money and end up selling it on and buying another.

You need to try saddles on and have a ride about, it is the only way to know. It is not just the fit (narrow, med.wide) it is the tree shape etc on the horses back and how long the points are and if they restrict your ponies shoulders. Also how you the rider feel in the saddle - comfort and balance.

Just wanted to point out also, that when you measure the width fitting it is not from D ring to D ring - all different styles of saddle place these in slightly different places. You need to be looking at where the saddle panel underneath sits on the horse - as this is the part that matters (obviously it can be altered slightly with flocking - but generally a right angle is a medium fit).

To be sure you do right by your horse, you ideally need a qualified saddle fitter. If you get it wrong its like you wearing a pair of shoes that do not fit.

As I say, you may get lucky, but personally there is no way I would even consider buyiing a saddle like this - but i am sure many people do

We have 3, and used to have another of them- Ours all have 4 straps and we got them new

TBH I think you would have to be lucky for it to fit, they are not 'one size fits all', as we have wide, X wide and XXwide and the wrong one on the wrong pony really doesn't fit.

What mandk said. The old (which this is) Thorowgood Pony club saddles came with 4 girth straps (if I remember correctly)

So my 2, with 5 straps are bog standard now, moke???

i've just thought.....totaly totally off the wall here...but my old, now deceased DC used to drive a mini-moke.....

ok, i'll get me coat..

The question is will you know if it fits correctly if you you bought it and it looked ok?

Like any other saddle they mould to the shape of the original pony/horse it was fitted to...after a certain amount of use, hence why it is important to have them checked and reflocked if needed.

If you dont mind buying it and then selling it on again if it doesnt then go for it, along with a saddle fitter it would still work out cheaper than buying a new one.

The PC in xw fittings and the Griffen Cob are brilliant saddles for wide ponys/cob, there quite straight cut despite being a GP which give good shoulder clearance...depending on the confirmation, they are made with a wider tree, as opposed to the wintec where they use the same shape tree in all, but just have the changeable gullet system, also the fish can alter them slightly too.

No point pulling a cheaky stunt and trying a new one from a saddler because a second hand one will of been worn in, so you wont get the same fit.

Its a gamble but if you dont mind taking one then makeing every effort to see if it fits, but dont make do for the sake of not being able to sell it on.

You can also get them repaired, straps etc should they have been damaged.

As for measuring between d rings etc...total waste of time, but what would be a good idea if you looking at buying that type of saddle it using the measuring system on the TB website, so you can take a template...again not accurate but it will give you a better idea before buying a cheapy of ebay.

as there is more to fitting a saddle than just the fit aroud the withers and shoulder etc.

*whispers* I have a very very wide saddle (fitted my pony before his major diet - he had a table back) that I'm planning on rehoming...it's a bit tatty but lots of life left in it...

I doubt it! Never seen a Thorowgood really fit anything. I'm not quite sure what type of horse they intend them for!

[/ QUOTE ]

That is because too many people buy them, thinking just because they are adjustable and synthetic etc that they can get them to fit with the odd adjustment here and there.

There is a saddle out there for every size and shape of horse, providing care has been taken to fit it.

Just because you have not seen a well fitted TG saddle on a horse, it doesnt mean they wont fit anything and are no good.

Any saddle is worth its weight in gold if it fits, no matter what price or what its made out off.

I have a very well fitted TG saddle on my horse.
