Saw this today and picked some up without reading the instructions, because I know net curtain whiteners can be used to whiten a horses tail, my Mum has now worried me by saying his tail will fall off if I use it...

I would only be dipping the bottom of his tail in it to remove the stains, no contact with his dock/lower legs.

Why don't you test it on your hair first? if yours stays in i guess its safe....on the other hand you could just use fairy liquid, hot wateer and put a bit of effort in!

I cannot believe that people really risk a serious skin reaction, using biological detergents on horses. Either buy a horse shampoo at a tack shop or use a baby shampoo or a hypo-allergenic one to be on the safe side.

I don't think she is using it on the skin, just the end of the tail. Worst that can happen is the hair will dry and break off.

OP, make sure you condition it well after and keep it condtioned or use oil for a week or so after to maintain some moisture in the hair.

This product is not a detergent, basicly it works by making washing fluoresce under UV Light,eg in daylight. This is what makes your whites whiter. The old fashioned way was using Borax in the wash ,or the good old blue bag, both of which I have used to advantage on grey tails. Unfortunately the data sheet doesnt give the active ingredients so I cant tell you if this is just a "ble bag" by another name. It does however tell you to wear gloves so be carefull if you decide to try it.

If just using it on the ends I don't see a problem as its old dead hair isnt it... the roots no way! No different than us bleaching our hair, if it went on our skin it burns, if it goes on our hair it lightens it, if wrong strength the hair will break off, it doesn't fall out from the roots xx

We use Fleabitten grey horse shampoo on our haffy and his mane and tail comes up platinum blonde ! xx

I would stick to shampoo, personally!

I use "Touch of Silver" - the old lady shampoo you can get in most supermarkets. Absolutely works a charm and it's a fraction of the price - so you can use more for less!!!

I would also invest in the spray in conditioner if they have any. Sparkly white goodness :)

Believe me - it has turned black tails white!!!

Try using a denture cleaner, if it is safe to use on something which goes in a persons mouth then should be fine on a horse, works a treat with whiteneing most things :)

Shouldn't make his tail fall out but could cause the ends to break so make sure that you use a good conditioner afterwards - Fructis Sleek & Shine Conditioner for Coarse Rebelious hair is brillient.

Thank you everyone.

I am only planning on putting the ends in it because no matter how many times I put it in denture cleaner - sterident, or use proper horse shampoo - diamond white, bloom, cowboy magic it is still dull and yellow. I saturate his tail in condidioner and then mane & tail to stop stains sticking, but he is hideous and manages to get filthy overnight - so now I have got a tail bag.

Silver shampoo I will get this week and have a final attempt before I may use the whitener.

Supreme products blue rinse is brilliant and safe -have used on my mare's legs now they have gone silver :( as well as her tail. A very yellow tail (she wees in hers, bless her!) can take a couple of goes to get it really silver, and it's a good idea use a bit of conditioner in between. But to keep that tail white, a tail bag really is the only answer, as even dust from your arena can stain it!
(I'm so thrilled that my youngster has a black tail!!!) :D

I'm sure her tail will be fine, years ago we didn't have all these specialist shampoos.
The most popular tail whitener then was a curtain whitener called 'Dolly Blue' which i believe can still be bought on-line. People used it for years without ill effects.

Nowadays I prefer to use Quic-silver shampoo.
