Having trouble since beginning of July with my geldings sheath. He seems to produce an awful lot of smegma and beans. He had a bean over an inch long and then 3 weeks to the day he had another similar size. Lots of orangey/peachy coloured smegma dripping down his legs, sometimes bloody. I am at my wits end as to what is causing this. Has anyone any ideas please? Thank you.

Sorry didn't want to read an run, no experience of this at all. Have you had the vet out to take a look? If not, I would definitely get them out especially if he's passing blood. It maybe something as simple as an infection.

Sorry can't be of more help, hope he gets better soon

Hi Yes the vet has been out app 8 times since July and will be out again today xx Thank you x

My vet took a huge bean from my gelding the other day, the 10p coin I photographed it next to was swamped by its size!

There were lots of small bits as well in chunks, I don't think my vet could believe he had been carrying such a big one, without any problems with having a wee or anything!

Not sure how much he's charged me but he said it would just be the price of the ACP injection whatever that it. Expensive I think but worth it. He is moving a little better too on the left rein, still lame on the right rein though.

It might be worth testing for Cushings - I've read that excess smegma production is one possible symptom. My older gelding definitely produces more now than he did, and he is borderline cushingoid (and on Prascend). I just keep him really clean - if yours doesn't mind being cleaned, just keep doing him every few days for a while and see if it makes a difference.

Well vet been again and we are going to change his bedding and sedate and clean twice a week for 3 weeks. Another swab taken. There are tears in the membrane wall which the vet isint too sure what they are. Vet will be back out on Fri and we will go from there
Cushings is a possibility too soloequestrian and we will test for it after all the above if still having problems.
Our vet charges app £120 for visit/ACP & clean applecart14. Hopefully he continues to go from strength to strength xxx

I own a mare..what on earth is a willy bean??!

It is a build up of smegma (material that has accumulated from around the penis) in a male horse that accumulates over a period of time and forms a bean like shape which can eventually lead to urinary problems and (some people believe) a difference in gait of the horse.

In a male human the penis would be washed so this build up would not develop.

Can I hijack please? My gelding has a lot of black crusties on his willy & black gunk on his legs, he is also quite 'wet' in the stable & finds moving freely forward when working difficult. I admit I haven't hunted for a bean.. having read the Mr Hand thread on here, I was in pieces  and couldn't face the idea, should I be getting the vet to delve? My other boy is a clean as a whistle! :D

there are actually people called" bean cleaners" who will come and do it for you ,but you could also ask the vet they wont mind but will have to sedate for him to drop it out to clean it so youll get a hefty bill .best thing is wait til he pees then make a grab for it lol x

Best to get the vet, bite the bullet and pay for the cost of the sedation.

Or you could do it yourself with sedalin. My vet said once a year really, and with warm water, NO SOAP OR KY JELLY OR ANYTHING ELSE. You don't want to start changing the PH balance or you will be in trouble. xx

I have a home -bred 9 y/o gelding. I have NEVER cleaned his willy, but last week, just out of curiosity when he was letting it all hang out, I put a glove on to see if he had one of these beans. He had a very small ( pea sized) , fairly soft 'bean'. Is he abnormally clean? His willy itself sometimes has a few flakes of dead skin, but nothing else, and they seem to flake off once they are loose, as he draws his willy back in.
Is it possible that there is a bit of an obsession for willy cleaning, which actually causes some of these problems?
Obviously, if a gelding had problems staling, or didn't draw properly, then it would be worth checking if there is a problem, but otherwise I tend to leave well alone!

I think it gets worse with age - my boy is 17 now and I didn't clean him until about four years ago when his sheath swelled up. He now has borderline Cushings, and seems to benefit from a bit of a clean each week. I think people make a big deal of cleaning - I don't use gloves, and it's not bad to do at all. I do think there are two secretions - there is the black smegma that is produced high up the sheath, and there is also a yellow secretion which is what forms 'beans' and coats the shaft of the penis. I've never found a formal description of this though.

Just to update. My boys recurrent infections have most likely been caused by wood pellet bedding. When he lay down and flopped it out the bedding was sticking to his willy, which he would then draw back in. It was like putting a Brillo pad in there. As its fine and gritty it would rub, get sore etc...since putting him on straw he's been fine. As an aside his skins stopped that awful itch too. He's a sensitive boy :-)
So why did I find this out after paying for a ton of wood pellets!!!!!

I have had a similar problem with a 2 year old. Vet suggested putting natural bio live yoghurt up there! If he has a bacterial imbalance then there can be an increase in smegma production. I have to say, it works a treat. I still pop some up there every couple of weeks as maintenance.
