I have a grey show cob, luckily for me, he is not a hairy beast and only needs hogging and heels trimming in Summer.
I have my own clippers (both cordless tiny ones and Lister Libertys) but am too wimpy to clip him myself

He is very very well behaved to clip - it's not that. It's just as he is grey it seems very easy to get tram lines on his coat and he also has a sensitive skin which looks like weals marks where the clippers overlap.
I like him to look smart (I know! that's not the best reason to clip! But he gets very sweaty once his coat comes through and always has a hunter clip) and I am terrified that I'll make a mess of it so I always ask a good friend to come and do him, using my clippers.
However, she has now moved away and I fear I will have to do it myself - any tips for a terrified first timer?!
How do I do the tops of his legs?
What if he goes all stripey? I would like to show him later this Winter so don't want to make a mess of it

Hmm if I were you I wouldn't do it myself... if youre planning to show him i mean!!! But if you are going to do it just get stuck in and go for it its the only way!! I'm sure others will have more technical tips!!

good luck!!!

The stripes grow out after a couple of weeks so don't worry about them. If your horse is good to clip then just take your time. Check the flat part of the clippers (the part that lies against the horse) regularly to see if they are still cool and not getting hot. Clean the vents regularly and keep them oiled. You'll be fine and if you do mess it up it will grow back. You'll just have to ride with a bag over your head for a while!!

It's not difficult to clip, once you start you will get the hang of it and any tramlines will grow out quickly, especially this time of the year so no need to worry about that, unless you have a show coming up very soon I would just have a go. If you make a complete mess of it, you can always get someone more experienced to come up and tidy it up for you !
Get some chalk and draw the lines you want before you start, look at a pic of your horse taken when he was clipped out so you can see what it should look like !

Any Livery or Racing Yards near to you? There are always some staff on these yards who can clip beautifully - and need the money!

Thank you everyone! I have thrown myself on the mercy of the lady in the opposite stable to me, who was clipping her WB yesterday evening.
She is going to help me tomorrow evening as she is an experienced clipper - so both my sets are on charge - wish me luck! Thanks once again

you can do this yorself! never use fine blades (skinned look esp on a grey) always use A2 blades!!! is your grey a flat white? or a dapple? or fllea bitten? last 2 are generous to mistakes , if a flat white get a pro to do if you want to show!! the lady in opp stable, before she clips yours, needs to make sure she is insured! and machines and leads PAT tested! and many will say only a few days between a bad clip and a good clip is only a few days but that is b*******> esp on a grey!

Argh now I am scared! I have two sets of sharpened medium blades....I don't mind him being a bit stripey the first few days but better if not.
He was dappled but now only has dapples on legs and bum/shoulders only, body is fairly white but going fleabitten. This is him!
