My New Forest mare has very recently started crib biting in the field, she is turned out 24/7 with a companion...i have only had her a couple of months as i rescued her from slaughter,(she was examined by vet) however i hadnt noticed her doing it before about 2weeks ago...they have hay to munch all day and get a 'hard feed' at the end of the day just as a token feed really and just have hi-fi lite and a cup of pony nuts with some succulents. I have vet coming out to give tet shot soon so will ask her opinion but i havent really delt with this vice before i wondered what the cause may be??

Ive know boredom in the stable can cause it but can it in the field too? she only does it on one part of the fencing by the feed area and no where else....i will get vet to give opinion on ulcers but what can i do if its a boredom thing? i believe it most likely is this as she is rather naughty and has a habit of jumping out! (into peoples gardens etc..!!) she also follows me around the field when ever i am there and seems to really enjoy a stroll up the lane! help! i dont want it to become a permanent thing! any advice welcome...i have investigated boredom breakers for stable but all high in sugar so not very suitable!!

I don't have experience of it but a horse stabled 4 doors down is really bad. Even if she has a haynet she stands there windsucking and when she's in the field she does it on the wooden posts as well as the plastic posts.

my mare will crib after her feed sometimes, if she is in the stable and has hay or haylage available she tends to go straight to that and not crib. i stopped giving her a feed when she was out 24/7 as she cribbed on the fence even though there was plenty of grass. i didnt even give her a piece of apple as that would also start her off. it may be worth not giving any hard feed especially as she is a small native...hope this helps..
