Does anybody have any advice or ideas to try and stop/ wean my horse from doingthis ?

i have an ex racehorse and she windsucks from the stress of being raced then tooken out of it, shes got a leather windsucking collar but i feel bad sumtimes as she wears it all the time and its getting old and a new one is quite expensive thanks xx

Keep her life as calm and routined as possible, make a fuss of her, and leave her out as much as possible. Line stable walls with kick boards to leave as few edges to hold onto as poss, we once put dandy brushes upside down glued on the door to be able to take a mare's collar off.

She is very calm and she does have a routine and i think i over spoil her lol , we did put kickboards all the way to the roof . i have never tried that lol , i do take off her collar but the only bt she cancrib or windsuck on is her door and a square in the wall for seeing my other hrse
:)

Sorry I dont have any suggestions! I too have an exracehorse mare who cribs, she started it probably from the stress of being sold on etc - is now unstressed but seems to just cribbing. Ive put up elec fence wire on top of fences but there are still places she can crib

If out in the field, run electric fencing around the perimeter to stop her latching onto posts or rails.
But ulitimately you need to find the root cause of her cribbing. Has she been scoped for ulcers (a big possibility in an ex-racer given all the hard feed and lack of forage normally associated with racing yards) or stress if taken from a friend?
I do worry what you will do though if she is poorly, if you find replacing a cribbing collar expensive.

Hi, I bought an ex-racer, straight out of racing at the end of july, he cribbed non-stop. First thought was that it was probably a stomach ulcer type problem (caused by the un-natural feed/water routine) so he is turned out full time (bless, hes only just got used to not having to come in after an hr!) where there is nothing he can grab onto, also he comes in at teatime with other 2 for some food, to which Ive added limestone flour (this is similar to antacid & a herbal digestion mixture) surfice to say, the cribbing HAS STOPPED!!! He will try maybe once or twice in half an hr if he thinks i'm not watching, not because he needs to just because its such an ingrained habit. Im well chuffed how much hes improved just 'chilling' :) Its just a time thing.

hi,
Im going through exactly the same thing with my boy. hes an ex racer and cribs constantly! Unless he is out, I think its may be the stress of being stabled a lot as he has never been seen to do it in the field. I would suggest getting your horse scoped. there is usually an under lying reason for the wind sucking. Have you tried settlex? ad lib hay and high oil and fiber based feed rather than cereal based feed.

hope you get it sorted x
