Just wondering if it is possible to windsuck without holding onto something? I have a tb who will do an exagerated swallow of nothing and then do a big sniff through his nose - the same we would do if we had a runny nose and no tissue handy! Its not affecting him in any way and he doesnt have a cold or any other ailments, in fact he's in tip-top condition and form. Has anyone else heard of a horse doing anything like this before. Thanks

They do windsuck without holding anything, when they take hold and suck it is usually called cribbing, the swallow you describe could be windsucking although I don't think sniffing is usually involved, maybe video it and post it on here or send it to your vet for a proper opinion if no one on your yard knows what it is, they can develop stereotypical behaviours and put their own spin on it, the sniffing may be his own way of expressing himself.
Windsucking and cribbing are associated with ulcers which needs to be considered even if there are no other signs.

Hmm, interesting. I'll try and get a video but because it's so quick and infrequent it may take me a while! He's no copied from anyone else as he's at home and my other aged TB wouldn't have a clue on how to do things like that!!!!. I'll keep you posted, thanks

I've got one that does this, but only when she's anticipating food or a bit stressed/excited about something (usually food :) ) Mine only does one grunt/suck and not all the time it's just a now and then thing with her.
