Winergy - does it have this weird effect on anyone else's horse?

I did the winergy feed trial last summer and I've been feeding my mare the low energy one for about six weeks now and both times its had this strange (but good!!) effect.

After about a month on the feed, she becomes really laid back and affectionate. She's extremely sharp normally and prone to being boisterous, excitable and somewhat rude and on this feed she just changes. She still enjoys her work, she's still alert and attentive, but just seems... content I suppose. Its really strange. We've had to limit turnout the last few weeks at my yard due to the weather and she has stayed relaxed and laid back when handled and ridden.

I think I might cut it out for a few weeks just to see if its definitely definitely the food - but both times its the only part of her routine thats changed. Anyway, my reason for posting is really not to plug winergy!! and no I don't think it will have a magic calming effect on anyone else's horse, but to ponder whether there could be an explanation for this.

I have considered she might have low-grade gastric ulcers, considering her competition lifestyle (in the past) limited/no turnout and little forage (again in the past) and that she can't tolerate cereal feed (loses weight dramatically).

What do you think - a reasonable explanation or me clutching at straws? Can anyone suggest a different explanation?

And just a disclaimer, feeding winergy is not a substitute for calling the vet, saddler, physio, dentist or learning to ride/handle your horse properly, nor does it have magic ingredients AFAIK!!

If you like the results why cut out the feed? Thats mad!

The likely reason is because winergy is fibre based, which is what a horses digestive system has evolved to use. Starch in many horse feeds is very high and not great for mental or physical health! Also, as you suggest, maybe she had ulcers which are now better because of a good diet.

Fibre is what a horse should be fed, your horse obviously agrees!

Dont do it!

Feed mine winergy low energy, 4 contented horses wouldn't want to try testing and have one kick me in the head just to see what happens if I change their feed. Old saying don't fix what isn't broken

My boy loves and does very well on winergy conditioning - not feeding it yet as we have had great late season grass left up til the last few days - have a feeling will begin feeding in the next week or so as we have had our first frosts (not to mention a deluge of rain - we are in Cumbria) and winergy will be back on the list - I like it lots. As everyone else has said, if it isn't broke don't fix it!
