Winergy Growth contains Molglo. Presumably Molasses. Hmm.

I like the Winergy products, but don't (can't afford) to feed at full rates. I bulk my broodmares feeds out with a handful of HiFi Lite, and beet, to prevent her going and eating the foals Winergy. So far so good.

Last night at bedtime when I added the beet a lump of sticky stuff was in the feed, a big lump. This had to be either from the Winergy, or the HIFi, which I know is not the Molasses free one. I have a bag of that too but feed it to a youngster who doesn't require feeding as such.

I prized this lump apart and within it were a few of the teeny weeny pellets that are in Winergy, so my guess was that was where it had come from. I then read the ingredients list on the back of the bag, which yes has always been there and yes I could have read them at any time, but Molglo was listed as an ingredient.

I appreciate that they don't say in their sales pitch that it is Molasses free, but they kind of give you the impression that it doesn't contain that 'type' of ingredient. Knowing that there is molasses in it could be a determining factor for some people.

Anyone have any thoughts on this, is it worth talking to Winergy about it? I'm not looking for a free bag, just clarification.

I think this post illustrates exactly why we should not just rely on the manufacturer's 'bumf' (with vague terms such as 'conditioning', 'low sugar', 'non heating' etc), but actually request that they give us the real hard facts - list of ingredients, starch/sugar percentages, MJDE/kg etc.

It may also go some way to explaining why she was rather 'on her toes' earlier in the year, most out of character, when she was on Low with some micronised linseed added in for extra calories as she had a young foal at foot. I took her off both but did wonder about whether it was the Winergy as she's had the linseed as and when required for a long time, with no adverse effects.

Erin, that's quite a high sugar % isn't it? Depends how much they add in I suppose.

Yep, used to make the feed more palatable. Email/phone and ask for the full spec is the best bet.

Its a complete minefield as I have recently discovered - even feeds marketed as 'lite' or 'low sugar' aren't really!

I feed my horse fibre nuts (much cheaper then winery low) and on the website it says 98% cereal free yet they are 13.5% starch...
Luckily my horse is absolutely fine on fibre nuts but it does go to show how careful you have to be especially if feeding a laminitic or horse with intolerances.

Been at HOYS all day, and I know that feed companies don't go there as a rule I wondered if maybe Spillers would be there, but no.

Which brand of nuts is it that has such a high starch content? I was never sure how Saracen Equijewel (?) had such a high starch content either, although it is rice bran, but no idea if that is a starchy component or not, but has to come from somewhere, I believe that is 18% starch.

I think most brands of nuts are high starch!

I was under the impression that rice bran was high in starch, but can't find anything to back that up!

I think most brands of nuts are high starch!

I think that depends on what you are comparing them to!

Spiller's High Fibre Cubes are 10% starch
Spiller's Response Slow Release Energy Cubes are 12% starch
Bailey's Every Day High Fibre Cubes are 15% starch

but all of those are significantly lower than 'standard' cubes, such as:

Bailey's Working Horse & Pony Cubes - 20% starch
Bailey's Topline Conditioning Cubes - 26% starch
Spiller's Conditioning Cubes - 20% starch
Allen & Page Hacking Cubes - 25% starch

My fibre nuts are D&H.

Tbh I don't really think 13.5% starch is that high, this level of starch doesn't affect my horse at all. I'm wary of any feeds that have higher than 15-16% starch, I avoid Pasture nuts and working nuts for that very reason.

My horse doesn't have any problems with lammi or ERS or anything.

A little bit of starch and a little bit of molasses is Ok by me, don't like too much though!
