My horse has had a cough/cold for the last 5 days or so, which is now starting to clear up. He caught it from a new horse who had it when he came.

His cough has been quite dry and very occasional, but I wandered if it might be worth buying a tub of the WE Ventilate, as apparently a viral infection can leave the airways prone to secondary bacterial infection? I haven't ridden him obviously and don't intend to until he's not coughing at all.

Do you think it would be worthwhile?

I'd save your money hun. You're right that a nasty virus can make a horse (human, cat, dog) susceptible to opportunistic secondary bacterial infections. My horse, sadly, is increasingly prone to infections in his larynx from the ghastly hacking cough he gets every summer from COPD/RAO. When that happens, he needs antibiotics to zap the bacteria. No supplement on earth can do that. Most supplements (if you read the small print) only promise to support the horse in dealing with it himself. If your horse does indeed have a secondary bacterial infection that he needs help to shake off, the vet will prescribe antibiotics. These are no good at all for viral infections - his own immune system will deal with a viral infection over time x

Completely see what BoF is saying re bacterial infections but I would say that of all the repiratory supplements out the Ventilate is the only one that I have found effective in preventing my horse getting a cough whilst stabled during the winter. She does not have a problem at all but prior to Ventilate would occassionally have a single cough when starting ridden work. I think Ventilate is well worth the money as a preventative measure.

That's what I was thinking, just a tub to help support him getting over the virus? He lives out 24/7 and has never had a problem with coughing before, which is why I want to make doubly sure he is over it before he comes back into work.

He isn't showing any signs of bacterial infection so far, so fingers crossed he'll get over it o.k.

Thanks for your replies.x
