Dolly's causing me severe financial distress.....
.....She's 3 now, but has been backed (very lightly) for almost a yr. We got a 2nd hand Thorowgood saddle (endurance style) which was fitted by a professional. This yr with injuries to me & her not much has happened in terms of riding, just lunging & walking out.

Her saddle doesn't fit, the fitter says that she's an extra wide & due to the width of her spine she needs a saddle with an extra wide gullet, as normal saddles are pressing on her spine.

Does anyone have any experience of either the wintec wide or the Thorowgood cob (prefer T6, with changeable gullet)? Or any other solutions for my big girly? -I dont want to go down the route of traditional leather as I'm sure her shape will change again & possibly too much to just flock, so cant afford another leather one next yr and so on.

I have the wintec wide on my TBxID who is built like a table and love it. It has a very wide gullet which i really like. Definately reccomend it for the more voluptuous horse.

I used a Thorowgood Griffen Cob on my other horse (a cob) and loved it, its the only saddle that fitted him well, and i tried 19 other different wide type fitting saddles and I tried another saddler and he said I know exactly what you need, take one of these...(obviously in a few different widths) but specially designed for cobs...and I found one that fitted, there hard wearing, light, clear the spine, you can change the gullet and also they come with FISH inserts so you can also change the padding near the shoulders...because with all saddles then pan in, plus if your horse is only a youngster he/she will change shape with work and age, so you can keep your eye on the fitting, also they can be easily re-flocked.
What ever you decide I' recomend you have it checked or fitted by a saddle fitter to be on the safe side and also have a template done every so often to keep on eye on how its fitting.

wouldn't touch wintec /thorowgood with a bargepoll I had no end of problems on my cob the extra wide on these saddles is not wide enough and can realy hurt the back in the end I got a Ideal F/W/B (full wide breed) expensive but havn't looked back and it dosn't roll anymore !!!!

I have a Wintec Wide and I love it, I thought I'd never find a saddle to fit Murphy (and he has gone down two gullet sizes in the past 6 months so having a changeable one was very useful).

I've got my local fitter coming out tomorrow with some leather ones to try (he suggested Ideal) and failing that I've booked in another for 10days time to try both wintec & thorowgood.

-I really wish I had enough money for a wow saddle!!!

To put her size into perspective, Stan is 16hh, OH is 6' & Dolls is HUGE!

Your Thorowgood fitter should be able to get you a Haflinger saddle, I believe these are wider than the cob ones but are not available on general sale in this country.

I recently sold my Wintec Wide. It was very comfy and the gullet is wider than usual saddles, plus you can change the width which is always useful for cobby sorts who can change shape a lot depending on the season.

I sold mine in the end however as it moved from side to side - this may however just be my horses shape as the saddler checked it and said it fitted fine, she couldnt work out why it would slip to the side all the time. I did BE etc. in it but was forever hauling it over. The one I have now isnt designed specifially for cobs yet seems to stay much stiller. Id say definately try the Wintec Wide though as Im sure it fits most horses fine. My only comment on it is that you are somewhat limited in what you can do in it, for example I couldnt do my stirrups up high enough for XC as there isnt much of a knee roll and it isnt very supportive in this sense for bigger SJ/XC stuff. Fine if you just do hacking or smaller RC stuff.

Saddler came back & tried an Ideal on her......it was perfect!!! It's a working hunter style, which doesn't bother me as her shoulders can move freely in in. Just bartering on the price now. Did try the wintec wide, but not nearly as good.

Fingers crossed on monday they accpet my offer on it.
