Looking to purchase a new Wintec Wide for my horse
.
Have noticed that the latest model looks different to the older one.
It looks quite nice. But what have they changed?

From the catalogue pictures it's hard to see, so Is it quite forward cut? Id rather it not too forward cut as my mare has large shoulders.

Are the panels nice and soft? Have heard that they are hard!( I would have a wool flocked version. ), but this may be the older models.

Is the cantle quite high?

Also, can you put a red (wide) gullet in it (from the non-wide wintec gullet range)????

Many thanks :)

From a fit point of veiw, the panels are flatter and shorter. The old wintecs are renound for have ridiculously long panels and needing a good 2 sizes shorter to fit.

They still have Cair version and flock so they're no differnt there.

The head is less wide: the panels are closer together at the pommel.

The flaps are about the same (a VSD cut) altough the knee rolls are biggers. They can still fit red gullets.

They do fit slightly diffrerently so try both before you buy.

That's very helpful, thankyou :)

Interesting about the head being narrower - WHY would you put a narrower head on a saddle for very wide horses, and also, how have they made it narrower when the headplate hasn't changed, and that is what determines the head width? Intrigued.

I'm not a fan of Wintec at all, this is another saddle fitter in the US who writes a great blog, we agree on this (in fact I think I was the one who said about "that darned kink...":

I have only seen one Wintec Wide fitted - it was the middle lilac gullet and was much too wide for the horse. I fitted the horse (a Highland pony) with a proper hoop tree which is very wide in the head, and fitted it two sizes narrower than it had been in. The WW had been fitted that wide to get it low enough in front, but the tree points were winging off, and the lack of contact plus lack of support from very thin panels, meant that the saddle was extremely unstable. It had not, however, been fitted professionally, but there was no way it would have fitted this Highland properly.

SBloom, thankyou for that very imformative reply.

My budget is only £450, so I cant find an alternative very wide saddle in leather 2nd hand in that price category.
I have given up with Ebay after a couple of disapointing purchases.

What do you think about the latest Thorowgood Cob?

I have a TG Maxam Cob now, but it dosent go any wider than XW, also, Im not very happy with the width of the panels, they seem rather narrow and 'bulbous' . Not what id expect on a saddle for a wide broad backed horse!.

The TG cob is better, but as I don't fit them I only see the ones that aren't working, and they obviously don't fit all cobs. The Maxam is actually flatter and can work better, but clearly not if the headplate doesn't go wide enough for your horse :(.

I paid £450 for a lovely ideal and cob saddle. Yes you can get a decent saddle. Friend has one for £400 range. Try horsegossip or horsequest. Preloved excellent too
