Can anyone tell me the differences between a Wintec 500 and a Wintec Wide please?

I've been sold a saddle as a normal Wintec 500 but think it may be a Wide model instead.

Can anyone advise me how I will be able to tell please?

a wintec 500 has 500 written on it somewhere (I cant remember where), mine is at the yard I'll have a look and get back to you.... I think you can also get white gullets for a wintec 500.

Wintec wide will take red and white gullets so that wont show you the difference. Wintec wide is flatter and broader usually with 4 girth straps, look at images on google and you can spot general differences. Often there is a label under the flap of a normal wintec giving year made and make.

Well it has Wintec 500 written on the two girth guards and was sold to me (second hand) with a green gullet bar in but it has 4 girth straps so does that mean it is actually the Wide model?

Under the flap it says:

Wintec W 05 10 0038 44

Does the W stand for Wintec or Wide!?

I have a couple of Wintec 500s and a Wintec wide. I thought only the wide had four girth straps instead of 3. That's certainly my experience. The whole gullet of the saddle is wider in the wide compared to the standard 500 as a result the cantle end has two rivets instead of one.

If it's a wide I really don't think it should be used with a green bar - my saddler said they were ok to use down to a blue. I've used a white with no problem, but I can't imagine fitting that saddle to a narrow horse.

EDIT: After a bit of Googling, how about asking Wintec themselves via http://www.wintec.net.au/contactUs/contactForm.html

You are not supposed to use anything narrower than a red wide gullet, definitely not a blue medium wide gullet!

Thanks, Clava. At risk of hijacking the thread (sorry) where is that information definitively available, please? The downloadable fact sheet from Wintec doesn't state the limits.

I haven't used it yet as when I saw the four girth straps it rang alarm bells!

I'll take some photos later and post.

I don't want a wide one so if it turns out to be the Wide model then I'll have to sell it and buy another one.

I emailed Wintec last week but haven't heard anything back yet!

I'm pretty sure it is written on the literature that comes with the wintec saddle, but I 'd have to dig it out to check, i know I have read it somewhere when researching them. I have a wintec wide and a New standard wintec.

OP - could the 4th strap have been added later?

Actually it says only down to red on the Wide saddle itself! Read the white warning label under the flap. :), it is very clear

I suppose the fourth girth strap could have been added later. Would someone go to the trouble to do that do you think? I bought it off ebay, it looks immaculate, like it's has hardly any use.

It hasn't got a warning label on, just a normal black label with a serial number.

I think it's a newer one as it has silver studs etc. I think the older versions have gold studs don't they?

my Wintec Wide has "gold" studs and my New wintec gp has silver. Is it the "New" model?

My New Wintec standard one has a slot for a 4th strap!!! just not got a strap attached!

I once bought a wintec 500 second hand which had a point strap fitted by the previous owner, so it had 4 girth straps. I emailed wintec about the gullets years ago and they said only the red and white gullets (or the purple ones that come with it) can go in the wintec wide, so if someone has squeezed a green gullet in there the saddle could be damaged.

Mine standard one also has the Wintec 500 on the girth guards, so I think yours sounds the same , and not a Wide one :), just someone has added a straps to the 4th balance points.

Ah that is sounding good! Thanks all!

I will have a saddle fitter out to fit it properly anyway but I just didn't want to pay the call out fee for him then to tell me that it's a Wide model and won't ever fit my medium horse!

I wouldn't want to use a saddle with the wrong sized gullet for my horse and also wouldn't ever want to sell it on without being 100% sure what it is and which gullets could be used.
