Have a 13.3hh highland pony with no withers!! My daughter has been riding her in a wintec 2000 (very old model) with an extra wide gullet but we are having saddle issues!!!!! Looking to buy a new wintec extra wide saddle cair model but just wondered if anyone can give me advice please. She is rather rotund just a very good doer, aged 7

I had one and didnt like it. Had the 16.5 inch seat as my pony is short backed. It was huge on him (needed a full sized numnah!), really heavy and the Cair was hard and squeaked. It just didnt fit.

OK so I'm just getting "into" Wintecs........ am in the process of sorting my two out having had a negative saddle experience and needing to do the thing properly.

The best thing you could do would be to get hold of a Wintec saddle guage, they're on e-bay quite cheap at the mo; and measure yours, THEN you'll know what size gullet you need.

Think (not totally sure, so willing to stand corrected) that if you buy a Wintec WIDE, you'll only be able to use the "wide" range of gullets. Think (again, not sure) that an "ordinary" i.e. not "wide" Wintec will take up to a White gullet plate, but if you put any of the wide gullets like the XW, 2XW or 3XW in an ordinary Wintec, you'll break the tree - and think its vice versa as well.

Hence the importance of knowing what size you'll need. And bear in mind that the measuring guage isn't an exact science: a professional saddle fitter measured mine for me, and it came up as 3XW, and yet that seems way too wide for him!

But really, the best thing is to get a Wintec saddle fitter out and then you'll know what you're looking for. Once you've got an idea of what sort of Wintec, i.e. ordinary one (with or without CAIR) or Wintec Wide, you need, you can always have a look on e-bay and buy what you want ever so much more cheaply than you would elsewhere.

Are you specifically looking for a Wintec? If you DO start to look around at who else is doing cob saddles etc., then please feel free to PM me as there is a company which you would do well to avoid.

I had one fitted by a really good sadder..really suited my asymmetrical mare :)

Sold it with her though but new owners are selling so bought it back and going to have it fitted to new horse -hopefully it wont be too short as its only a 16.5!

I have all of my five in wintecs from the tb to the tanks and love them.
they are fitted by a proper wintec fitter though so make sure you get on out.

i have the widea on my two tanks and they fit a dream, though you cannot use a wide plate for a normal and vise versa as it will break tree.

and the wintec measure thing isn't that good, it says my welsh needs a blue plate when she actually needs a white :/

hope you have luck with finding. A good fitter. That is the key.

They're not great on Highlands usually but worth a shot.

At the very wide fittings the tree starts to banana, which isn't helpful on very flat wide horses.

Bear in mind that they come up VERY long both in seat size and especially in the panels. If the pony normally manages a 17" then the 16.5 will probably be too big.

Wintec def wrong shape , I have Thorogood T6 cob which is fab

This. Our saddler won't sell the Wintec Wide as she says the tree is the same shape as the standard Wintec which is no good for wide horses. She says you're much better off with a Thorowgood Cob saddle. We have one for Dad's Welsh D and it fits her lovely.

Wintec saddles are made in the far east and are designed with the tree shape to fit 'far eastern' horses, not british natives, or indeed most british horses- and especially not those with wide, flat, backs. Best advice would be to get a saddle fitter out with a range of good quality second hand saddles for your horses type and size and get one fitted to the horse-it will be much, much cheaper in the long run-especially as you say you are already having saddle issues! Why do you think there are so many wintecs on ebay?????

Thanks for all the comments :-)
Found as many Thorowgood saddles on eBay as there are wintec so it's obviously an individual choice.....
Made my choice and ordered a Wintec Wide CAIR 16.5
SO VERY HAPPY! LOVE WINTEC SADDLES :-)
It fits our no withered fat barrelled pony lovely! The difference was immediately apparent! Instantly cured our saddle issues!! One happy pony one much happier rider (not such a happy Daddy!!!) oh but for the love of our horses!!

I hope you got it properly fitted? Just because it's better than the 2000 (which will be an appalling fit on a highland pony) doesn't mean it's a great fit.

The fact you justify your choice by saying there's hundreds of Thorowgood on ebay just shows your lack of saddle knowledge. There are hundreds of older Thorowgoods on ebay because they changed the model every year or so. And they weren't adjustable. But you'll only find one or two of the new models on ebay.

Please get the saddle properly fitted by a good saddler fitter, if you haven't already done so. You might be lucky and have the odd highland pony that the wintec wide actually fits.

I'm another one who doesn't like Wintec - most horses I've had and ridden in Wintecs went better in a Tgood. The Tgoods never had the changeable gullet for a long time, but since they've brought that in they are fab, wouldn't go back to wintec.

I have a very flat backed native with no withers and so far I have found the wintec tree suits him, I have ordered the newest version of the wide which is flocked.
