Okay, I've started shopping for my youngsters first saddle. Im not breaking her in until June but wanted to start looking! Definatley want something with a changeable gullet due to her age and changing shape.

I was going to buy a new wintec but recently found a fairly new second hand wintec. The lady stated that it is an extra wide one, my youngster is a welsh and is pretty wide already. However, im not totally sure on gullets for the extra wide saddles.

Can you put standard gullets in the extra wide wintecs? Like a medium gullet. Not sure if i'm asking a daft question here, but the saddle is £150 and the seat size and colour i want! If the gullets are standard ones then I will snap it up straight away!

if it is the extra wide saddle...then no :( you can only put in wide, extra wide and extra extra wide? .......... white, lilca and purple plates?

if it is the standard saddle with an extra wide plate in it... then yes :) you can change it to the medium plate!

Just a thought but, check that the tree of the Wintec fits the back. Wintecs have a banana shaped tree which often doesn't fit natives well. Welshies usually have flat backs and Thorogoods are often a better fit.

I bought a Wintec 'tester' guage. It shows my Arabs (13.3hh and 14.1hh) both need white xtra wide gullets. I use the 2000 over a Parelli therapad and the Isabel (old style) over a memory foam pad. So far both ponies are very happy, but I don't know how anything bigger/wider would cope!!

We are looking for a wide cob one for my friends new loan horse.

I have a gullet guage but it only goes as far as extra wide and the horse is slightly wider than that.

Apparently the extra wide is the narrowest which will go in the wide cob one so she is hoping it will be fine. The saddle she was lent with the horse is too wide, so the horse is not that massive.

I do think standard Wintec widths are a bit on the small side. Our other cob is extra wide but only needs a mediumwide to wide in her other saddles

No, the red wide gullet is the narrowest you can get into a Wide saddle, it says so on the saddle white label. I have a red gullet in my Wide saddle.

Take care- the NEW wintec wides can only have down to the white plate (XW) the standard wintecs can only go up to white :). The new ones have the new riser system which is super adaptable to accomodate almost all shapes, and the new models are far comfier than they ever used to be :)

I was going to get a wintec wide, and then saw one in a tack shop and was shocked at how banana shaped the tree was! It would never have fitted my cob.

I have gone for a t4 cob instead, which has a flatter tree and you can put all the gullets in, from narrow to xxwide
