So I'm hoping to take the pony to a pre season show next month and starting to stress about how to get her clean. She's a white grey and pretty dirty, hot clothing is not going to cut it. Do I buy/borrow one of the hot horse showers, bath as fast as possible and rug up? How would you guys approach it?

I had to bath a pony with lice and I just got her wet with warm tap water the did the rest of the bath as quickly as possible, towel dried her and put three thick rugs on until she dried.

A quick bath probably won't get her as clean as you expect (i have white points on my mare + mane and tail, even in summer getting them white is a challenge)

I would groom as much as possible, maybe even hoover her (or if you have access to a pet dryer/blaster use that) and hot cloth the really bad areas. Then you need to rug to the eyeballs, hood, and bandage legs for a while to keep her clean and work out the dirt. My part loan is always so clean under his rugs after a few days in them, even if he has rolled unrugged.

then then two nights before the show, give a wash of the legs and mane and tail and any REALLY dirty areas and rug with a few rugs. Waffle/cooler on the bottom, then a stable then a turnout if you need. When the bottom layer is wet, remove, when next layer is wet remove etc etc. This part might seem silly (i didn't think of it once with disastrous consequences) stable in a CLEAN stable, not a few days old or about to change one lol

Good luck at your show :D

we hot cloth the white grey at work and he comes up cleaner with that than he does if we bath him

Really?! Maybe I need to put more elbow grease into it ;) I'll give it another go over the weekend and see how it goes.

What do you put in the water, a drop of oil? I've heard of people using dettol but I don't know, it doesn't sit quite right with me. She could do with something to help lift the grease though.

I use fairy and grey hair shampoo.

we put some non rinse shampoo in, use water as hot as is comfortable for you and the horse, use 2 cloths and alternate, we don't bother bathing him anymore

vinigar will help shift grease

Someone told me tomato sauce is good too because of the vinegar in it!
it is and probably because of the vinigar its supposed to be good for getting tails whiter as well but I have not tried it for that and prefer the vinigar. its great for getting a super shine on them after clipping and used to suprise owners when they arrived of an evening to see their newly clipped horse

What's hot cloth please?

You need some pieces of old towelling or micro fibre cloths and half a bucket of hot water. As hot as poss but able to bare your hands in it. I use the naff skin product in the water. It comes with a free microfibre towel too!, although vinegar is good to use too.
Wet the cloth then wring and rub all over using a circular motion. Grease and dirt will come off on the cloth. Good to do after clipping too to remove loose hairs.

After 18 months of having to clean a mud loving grey pony for every outing I recently bought a shower king hot water horse shower and omg it has halved the amount of time to get him ready and he is much whiter and the whole shebang is sooooo much nicer for all concerned! When really cold I used to hot rag/cloth which was ok on clipped coats but not on hairy legs and ears...

We are fortunate enough to have a washing box with heat lamps so bathing in winter is a doddle which is great as I have a grey and white with a LOT of white :) Planning to clip and bath this weekend as he has regrown his coat and looks like he's not been clipped at all. He's actually had three clips already LOL
