My mare seems to be growing her winter coat back already!!

I'm so disappointed, she was looking gorgeous a couple of weeks ago, shiney coat and beautiful colour but now it seems to be growing a little fluffy and looks a bit dull :(

Is it only my mare this is happening too??

Is it the weird weather we have been having?

Check she's not Cushingoid. My Cushings mare sheds her coat out in the spring then grows back a longer coat than her winter coat! Now she's sheding it for the second time this year!

We have 3 that haven't finished losing their winter coats yet with this awful weather we've been having. I hope to get at least a week of summer coat before they start growing their winter ones again :(

Noticed that one off mine has started moulting her summer coat all ready :(

The other one still hasn't lost all her Winter coat

As soon as we pass the summer solstice on the 21st June the daylight hours start getting shorter. This gets picked up by a receptor at the back of the horse's eye, causing a chemical change which makes the winter coat start to grow back. We've got some very hot weather coming, hopefully it'll make those still getting rid of their winter woollies to shed them completely..

Mine's started shedding again. I think she may well be cushingoid and had started her on a supplement, so thought it may be to do with that, but possibly not

I really hope it means we aren't in for an awful winter.

I just noticed yesterday that my yearling is starting to get a thicker coat over her back. My mini still has remnants of his winter coat hanging off his sides. He might have his full summer coat all of a week before he changes again.
