Hi all,

New to owning - only had pony since January - so first autumn/winter with him. He's a fine furred Chestnut welsh cob-type and started to shed about a week ago - I've put him out in a lite-weight for the last week - been good for him (been a wee bit wetter than usual here ) .

MY question is this - when does the denser winter coat start to come though (roughly)? I guess it depends on breed-type - but hows your's fairing ATM?

I've got an ID mare and so far her winter coat isn't really coming through :D This year she was partly clipped about Feb time, she hadn't been clipped for the two years previously but it's much colder where we are now :(

Mine's a KWPN and is moulting like mad:(. He's got quite furry and gone very dark in colour(to dark bay from fairly bright bay). The clippers are going to come out v soon... ;)

winter coats are governed by daylight hours! not temperatures. but a relialble indicator is when the blackberries come out!

Okay that's fair enough :D - We've had fully fruited wild blackberries in abundance for a month now :D Strange year all round really - my strawberries have only started flowering two weeks ago and the woods are still green - and full of leaf....

Depends on how closely related to a yak they are.

My cobs coat is just about through and I could easily clip him within the next week or two. I agree about the daylight hours though. As soon as the days start getting longer at the end of January he starts to moult.

my id mare is quite fluffy
the gelding not at all
the pony also has started getting fluffy.

depends on Breed
if they are in or out full time
age
type

I'm clipping my ridden NF tomorrow. The non-ridden one is not very hairy at all... My hairy one's winter coat starts coming through in late July/August.

My fine-coated Polish sport horse is really fluffy now . . . earlier than ever before. He usually gets clipped once a year . . . he will be lucky if he gets away with two clips this year.
