Winter fluff? Surely not. Anybody else's horses getting hairy already?

I really can't remember them turning wooly this early last year? Or is it just my herd who are already growing their winter fuzz in preparation for winter?

Even Worm who is in 24/7 has already got an impressive amount of fluff! A warmblood with feather, honestly??

Maybe I'm very mean and they are hinting that they want rugging. :p

xx

Mine is very fluffy and he's had a rug on for the last month so we don't need to clip, it hasn't worked :p

My instructor actually commented on his fluff today and she's got the fun of clipping him when he gets fluffier! :)

Yep mine has fluff mde the decsion to strt putting a rug on him at, he wsnt even particually warm when i got him in at half 5!!! Ive even got somebody booking to have there horse clipped next week!! But i dont remeber having to do it this early last year it seems to be getting erlier every year!!!

One of the horses I ride is really woolly already, you can sink your hands into the hair! Apparently it means that it's going to be a really bad winter again, I heard somewhere that there might even be snow late October!

OMG snow in October!!! Oh i wish i could hibernate this year!!!!!!

Yep - our pony has been fluffy for a couple of weeks now - she stopped moulting quite so badly last week, as it was a bit warmer - but with all this rain and horridness coming in again now, I expect that she will fluff up even more.

I think the clippers will be attacking her fairly shortly...

Even my arab is starting to look a little fluffy around the edges - it's only the TB that is still looking sleek and summery :)

my 2 yr old isn't fluffy at all yet but i have has a LW turnout on him at night for the last week but the horse i share thats 13yrs has a very fluffy neck but also has had a LW turnout on. Its really started droppong cold on a night.

Mine is getting really grumpy about the amount of hay he's getting when he's in, has been moulting his summer coat for weeks and I've noticed the hair around his fetlocks definitely thickening, plus his mane is definitely growing and he's got his very pronounced snow chute starting to grow at the top of his tail, it's barely noticeable in the summer.

yep a little, but its more winteritous kicking in atm (he gets excited about winter :D) so we had a very exuberent ride y/d lmao think i shall start clipping soon YAY :D

Us too. Share horse was clipped out tonight. My boy was pretty sweaty after 40 mins in the school yesterday so he's not long for the clippers either.

Yes! Our little mare has grown her winter coat overnight!! She's very fluffy now and my boy is moulting quite alot but not too fluffy yet.

One of my mares has been fluffy for about 6 weeks now! We are i Aberdeenshire and had been warned about snow in September! Also that last winter was preparing us for this winter!!

Also there are a lot of berries out on the trees. However do trees produce more berries as they "remember" last year was a bad winter and they need to provide more food. Or is it "knowing" its going to be a bad winter? Like wise with horses do they produce a thicker coat as last year it was cold or is it they know its going to be cold?
Sorry for the strange question!!

Mines not because I started rugging about 2 weeks ago when I noticed a few others on the yard were starting to look like summer coat was falling out! He's got a nice full summer coat still, hoping to keep him like as long as poss cos he's a nightmare to clip!

Yeah starlas got a fluffy neck already :) Tbf it has got colder recently, and I dont usually rug her until I clip her, but as she's out of work this winter, I probably wont rug at all, and will have a VERY hairy horse to look forward too :D

Yes, mine is beginning to get fluffy as well, thought I was imagining it to begin with, but he is now turning from a light bay in to a dark bay. Did start rugging last week, due to the cold temps at night, and have now increased his feed back to winter rations!! The plan is to try and leave out for the winter!

the hairy one is getting very hairy, especially his beard - it's getting hard to put his headcollar on without trapping it. He seems to be growing his woolies from between his front legs too - looking very odd tbh :p sm x

My shetland has to have two different headcollers! a shetti headcoller for the summer and a pony sized one for the winter, as when all the fluff arrives and stars to take over, I cant fit the other one on his head!!!

my miniature shetland is as wooly as ever. My horse isn't but the temp has dropped significantly here and we started putting a lightweight rug on them at night. It was only 4 degrees at 8am.

the shettie just permanently looks like he's walked out of a thelwell book tbh. His black spots are getting very hairy - what's that all about ? :D sm x
