Winter hair rub!

Does anyone else horse get hair rubbed off in winter .It doesn't seem to happen on summer coat but winter coat seems prone to rubbing away.Chest ,ok, caused by rug and have bought a bossy bib so hope it regrows.Where your legs touch their sides and a tiny bit at back of saddle panels[ just had wow saddle fitted so hope that is a thing of the past.
Why does it happen in winter,he is clipped and his coat has grown a bit and when he is reclipped you won't notice it but if I don't clip ,it still happens so, its not a case of hair not growing it is being rubbed off.
Any solutions?

If you find the answer let me know, my friends horse gets rubbed (bald) by her legs, saddle and reins in late winter, so looks all moth eaten till his summer coat comes through!!!! He doesn't get rubs at any other time.

My mare is missing a chunk of mane

and had breastplate rubs on her shoulder area too. She has gone really itchy too this last couple of weeks.

I have bought some Mega Tek Rebuilder [off eBay] and I am trying that on her mane. It certainly smells very pleasant

and she doesnt object to me massaging it in.

I have to constantly wash my rugs - have resorted to getting thin neck fleeces to put under all her rugs as Lacey has a greayy greasy mane and the build up of grease rubs her mane! Very obscure, the bottom half of her mane is very thin now but now we've worked out what it is..fingers crossed it might stay this year.

When my old mare was molting summer to winter she used to get bald patches. Not even rubs - her flanks and loins were the worst. Never figured out why

I wouldnt worry too much, lots of horses have a dual coat at this time of year. It tends to go patchy where anything touches & moves.

OMG thank god I'm not the only one. I've rubbed bald patches on my horse where my legs touch his sides (well, the bald patch is only on the right side, guess I ride unevenly?) and my instructor was very stern with me back before Christmas. I felt like a terrible person and a terrible rider for having let him get lazy enough that I should nag him enough with my legs to rub the hair away. I haven't cried so much in ages! Poor Ronnie!

To hear that other people have had the same thing is the biggest relief. I was too ashamed to post on here about it as I thought everyone would think I was a very very bad person.

The hair is growing back, slowly, and not white as my instructor feared. It's the proper colour

Hehe well I probably AM a terrible rider, just maybe the rubbing isn't so awful after all. I'm glad to hear good riders suffer from it too

I am so pleased to read your post as I have the same problem only its the left side thats rubbed. (she's not clipped so it lookes even worse) I also feel like the worst rider in the world. Luckily my horse is grey so if the hairs were to grow back white it wouldn't show!
PS she has now started moulting and there is snow forecast!

My 1 horse had rubbed until the hair has just fallen out. She now has a patch about 4 inches in diameter on her side missing. and patches along her barrel. She rubs herself all the time. Her coat and skin are in tiptop condition, but its soooo itchy. She has no skin infections and has been deloused as a precaution but I think its just the wearing of rugs all the time has just made her itchy. I now take the rugs off for half an hour whilst they have breakfast in their stables so their coats can breathe. I also have a box walker who has given himself friction burn on his right shoulder (its the direction he spins. I have zippy tied the shoulders of his rug back to the neck to free the shoulder. Its really emabarassing to take their rugs off infront of people incase they judge!

I now wish I'd clipped them...
