the summer coat is starting to shed to be replaced by a darker, unshiny version

My girl is starting to wait at the gate for her dinner, a sure sign the grass just isn't giving her enough and...wait for it...while others are still closely watching their ponies for signs of lami...I have started feeding conditioning mix

the joys of winter with a 24 year old Arab who enjoys weaving, feels the cold and doesn't like to eat anything other than grass!

I'm going to try a stable mirror this year, she weaves in the morning mainly as she wants out as soon as the sun comes out (then proceeds to want back in around 12!) not sure it will work as she's been weaving her entire life.

I'm also considering taking down the anti weave grill so she won't circular weave behind it...again not sure it'll work but YO has said she doesn't mind the weaving over the door (yard full of lazy old b*ggers who won't bat an eye lid at her antics)

I have been considering clips and I usually go for a hunter (as she leaps around and lines just don't happen) but I might try a trace and see if she holds more condition (or her hairness covers how lean she really is

Anyway depressing post over, hot chocolate with marshmallows for getting this far!

This weather is making me depressed...as is the fact I have to leg it to the yard after work so that pony is turned back out in field before it is dark! Sniff...

Boo Booo Boo, to you

You had to say it didn't you.

I normally quite like winter, and enjoy nothing more than an early morning hack in the frost, but this year dreading it, and hoping that old lad does not drop to skeltor like last year.

Good luck everyone

Yes thanks for that!! I'm off to Cyprus next week so will really feel the chill when I get back. Always have furry horses and trees with a lot less leaves and, worst of all, my swallows will have left the yard.

La la la not listening (fingers in ears) first time in 7 weeks that have not had horses on 24/7 box rest so my summer is just beginning lol

Sorry I didn't mean to bring everyone down, I usually love winter too but last winter was just awful, it was cold and wet and just never seemed to let up! I know it's winter and it's going to be cold and wet but it just seemed to rain then freeze then rain then freeze, I think I got about 1 hack in the winter sun the rest of the time it was bracing against gail force winds, getting soaked and generally wondering why I was bother.

Fingers crossed we get lots of frost and maybe some snow but no rain or sleet or high winds

i LOVE this time of year. the flies are much less and i can hack out in peace. I can start thinking of the log fires and wolley blankets and hot toddies and marshmellows and casseroles ,and frosty white mornings with clear blue skies. Just got to beat the miserable grey summer we've had for the last 3 years.

I do actually like winter too

Riding in a flood lit school is so peaceful!! Darcy works his best at that time of year when its quiet besides the sound of his feet.

It is on its way, each morning seems to get darker and darker, i was sat in work earlier, looking out the window thinking ahead to horrible winter. I don't mind many aspects of winter, it is a lovely time of year in a lot of ways, but the lack of light is the worst part for me, second to this the rain, fingers crossed for a fairly dry winter for us all.
My girl is a laminitic but drops weight very easily it seems, but i am sure she would be fat if on lots of grass, but that's a no go area, so instead she eats me out of house and home in feed and hay, and its not even winter, eeekk

lovely!! muddy wellies, dogs and the horses.Mare not so itchy from sweet-itch,start losing the weight because I'm busy mucking out, so usually too knackered to argue with the OH and in bed by 8pm thank god big brother is nearly over as having to put toothpicks under my eyelids to keep awake. Sad life

Noooo been trying to ignore the fact that the grass is getting sparse and the ponies coats are going through that horrible dull shedding stage, only little mare is happy as she suffers from sweet itch and has been feeling far less itchy Im even pretty sure there has been some tail regrowth so not all bad.

Lack of sunlight gets to me too

If only I didn't work full-time and could see a few hours of daylight at least in the winter, instead of being stuck in an office dreaming of the weekend...

However we have the hunting season to look forward to

I prefer winter too, also in the South East we have had virtually no rain all summer therefore no grass, winter paddocks are bald and we need the autumn to be really wet !
No sign of winter here though, still hot and sticky.

i'm having to drag 3 in at night who i want to show untill the end of Sept....to try and ward off winter coats.

crap doesnt cover it...PS.

It's starting to feel distinctly autumnal in the mornings here!

I'm undecided as to whether I'm looking forward to winter or not yet - my 4yr old is broken (again) and vet is coming on saturday to try and get to the bottom of it.

So, if it's box rest then winter will be fab (cos she'll be in a big barn with a 10ft walk to the muckheap - I really don't mind mucking out
grin.gif
) If it's field rest then I'll be less chuffed

I love autumn/winter the best of all, next month should be brill, cooler days and nippier mornings, not freezing...just comfy, no flies soon, sun out but not hot, go for a good canter/gallop and not be a bath of sweat (me or the horse), me and my mare just don't do the heat we can't wait for next month

I can't wait for mine to be tucked up in her stable with her warm rug and and a haynet, but give me a couple of weeks and I'll be wishing it was summer again! I don't like autumn when it's just starting to get dark and I have to rush like a bat out of hell to get to the yard to ride before the sun goes down. If it's dark when I leave work I know there's no chance of riding in light, it's having the chance and usually missing it that I hate. Plus we have an outdoor school but it's not all weather and it gets really boggy in winter and the lights aren't great so for a spooky arab it's usually a recipe for disaster!
