Since the start of october both my horses have been coming in at night. They share a large shelter with a straw bed and hay and have a 9m x 5m concrete area and they are penned in free to go in and out the shelter or stand on the yard.
I was turning them out daily from 9 til 4 but this past week the mare has become unsettled and just spends the day racing around the field up and down the fence line which then sets the gelding off. So i end up bringing them in with hay on the yard area and they settle right down.
Its been so wet and my field is 3 acres of clay so in the winter gets really wet and boggy hence keeping them in on wet days and limiting turnout
They have been in since 12pm yesterday after only being out for 2 hours the mare just raced up and down and churned up all the ground so i bought them in.
Tomorrow i am having there official winter paddock fenced properly with post and rail (was elec fencing as had lots of work done outside and precious gence was rotton) and there is a fair bit of grass. So i am hoping i can let them out! The gelding is in work 4 x per week and i ttry hack the mare out at least once a week but i struģgle for time.
Usual winter routine is both out l on sectioned off field and coming in and out yard and shelter as they please. But its a nightmare as the mud is horrendous plus i am planning on keeping the gelding in work and keep up our regular lessons! Also he doesn't like being out and loves his stable! He won't even walk onto the mud if he can help it whwn its bad.

I wanted to ask what are your winter routines and do any of your horses stay in all winter?
Not sure what to do as the mare is so unsettled when out. When shes on the yard she spends most of the day staring out onto the rest of the field!

Your mare is telling you she doesn't want to be out in the wet. Let he be where she's happiest.
My cob wouldn't settle if I had the option to chuck him out. He'd much rather be in the dry where he has pretty much non stop access to good hay.

You have my sympathy. For me having them in would be a massive chore as it is a huge commitment to give them enough movement. Can they have hay in the paddock? Maybe that would help her settle. I can say that if it were me I would be trying everything to get her to settle to avoid the extra work.

Could you set it up so they can bring themselves in and out at will?

I have one, like your mare, who has strong views on where he should be when. It’s less stressful for all of us to leave it up to him.

We don’t do field turnout in winter (land is too wet), but by Autumn they don’t leave the winter all weather area by choice anyway ?

They are never ‘in’ so get more movement than many, just wandering about.
