After chatting with the vet I am going to keep my boy out all winter to try and help with his breathing and am just looking at bargain rugs available to supplement the ones he already has. Does anyone have any ecommendations for a 16.2 cob - short in the back and very big in the shoulders and bottom, thick neck and wide chest - weight 700kg!
Thanks!

Not sure how they fit big cobs, although they fit our pretty wide pony, but I would always recommend horseware rugs (rambo and rhino) if a horse is going to be wearing it pretty much full time. They are so good, don't slip or rub - although, not exactly bargain but you can pick second hand ones up off ebay (I know i did

People I know with shire x types swear by a make called Slumberdown as they are generous in the shoulders/neck.

Mark Todd - they are fantastic and fit my coblet really well (not many rugs actually do up round his front!!) I spotted some cheap(ish) Mark Todd rugs on equestrian clearance website the other day.

slumberdown and MT rubbed my big shouldered boy - short backed 16.2, found difficulty getting ones that went round front without rubbing at back as too long. have found wetherbeeta fit him best but has to wear 'bossy bib' under all rugs of any make. can often get them cheap as change colour regularly and last years often knocked out on discount.

Horsewear rugs are a terrible fit on horses with low set or wide necks - the buckles dig right into the base of their neck when they put their head down. The Rambo XL rug seems to be fine though - it's designed for wide cobby horses.

I have the same trouble and eventually just bought any rug (cheaper the better!) and adjusted it. I took the top breast strap off and placed it back on below the bottom on. They way they have enough neck room. It's pretty easy to do and took about half an hour with a sewing machine.

Fal are supposed to be good, my friends heavyweight show hunter (18.2hh weighs 820kg!!) lives in them, I think Slumberdown are their cheap version.

My horse is in weatherbeeta, masta, rambo and aerborn rugs, but to be honest anything fits him, he is 17hh, fairly short backed, shire X, although he's not a wide as he could be.

i use FAL rugs on my heavy horse as they are deep, plenty of room and great long lasting quality they do cost more but last for years .rambo and rhino rugs are no use for big wide horses.

Thanks to everyone! I have had a good look at the rugs he has and washed them today so will be having a look on equestrian clearance

FAL fits our chunky lad a treat. You can get extra deep neck ones which really do give more room for big shouldered horses.

Ive always used weatherbeeta on my cob, my last one lasted six years and only replaced it last year. They do some really nice full neck ones too, Orican I think?

Masta rugs fit my 16.1 cob brilliantly, I know a few people dont like them But I have never had a problem with them and he has a very big chest/shoulders.

I got a weatherbeeta Orican last year and it wasn't too great, that was more the fabric though. May try a slumberdown after reading this!!

My boy is a 16hh ratehr chunky cob...best ones I have found are Mark Todd rugs...I know they are a bit more expensive but soooooo worth the money as I have some that I have had for YEARS!!

FAL for chunky cobs.
And a couple of Bossy's bibs- really silky and wash and dry quickly - to prevent any rug rubs.
