Hi everyone, im doing a bit of winter rug shopping and i just got to wondering what everyones winter rug preferences are....
Last year i had mine in a medium weight with removable neck, and then a fleece or medium stable rug underneath depending on weather. I quite liked this combination as it could vary from a 200g turnout to a 400g turnout with neck alowing a fair bit of flexibility.
However, i know there are people out there that are live and die hard heavy weight rug fans, and made me wonder whats everyones preferences :D

Excuse the miserable winter post in mid July!

Thanks :D

I've got Medium Weights and Heavy Weights for my boys. :) One of mine is fully clipped out in the winter so a Medium Weight isn't warm enough for him. In fact, last winter when it was snowing and really cold he was wearing a fleece with a neck and a Heavy Weight stable rug with a neck! For turnout rugs, I tend to use a Heavy Weight Turnout rug with a neck for most of the winter as mine are only out for a few hours per day during the winter. My three ponies who live out alternate between their Medium and Heavy weight rugs depending on the temperature.

also, those who like the heavy weights, is that a heavy weight combo, or a 1/2 neck, as i notice the wug is 1/2 neck but im not sure i see the point of a 1/2 neck myself, so opinions welcome :D

I've voted many options!

Depending on temperature/clip as to what rug she's in. I am a die hard Amigo turnout fan and my pony lives out 24/7. Last year she had a medium with neck attached and a heavyweight (300g) with neck attached, she was blanket clipped. This year she has outgrown her rugs! So she still has the medium (200g) with neck attached but in a bigger size, I can't afford a heavy weight amigo with neck at the moment so she has a second hand JHL heavy weight with neck (300g) and then a derby house under rug (200g) to go under her medium when really cold to equal (400g). This year she will be fully clipped.

pink will be in a lightweight withfleece underneath as it gets colder and a M/W with neck or H/W when it turns bitter. she lives out.

My tb starts the autumn generally in a LW in day, MW at night. As it gets a bit colder he'll wear a MW in day and a MW with neck at night. Then about mid october he'll be stabled at night. During the day when it gets a bit colder he'll wear a rhino heavyweight(370g), with or without neck depending on weather. When it's really cold he'll wear his rambo supreme heavyweight(420g and 100g neck). If he's clipped he'll see most of the winter in his rambo. I'm not a big fan of layering rugs with him as they pull really tight on his chest, especially fleeces. At night he's generally in heavyweights. For the really cold, he wears a rambo jumbo rug (550g!!!) which is a half neck, like a wug.
My id is naked up until the worst, unless it's raining all day I'll turn him out in a LW with no filling. When really cold he'll go out in his mediumweight (weatherbeeta tristar). If we get really, really cold weather (I mean really cold!!) I'll clip on a liner to turn it into a heavyweight but he's quite overweight so it's very rare!!!

I put 'other' because I have two horses that were out last winter in medium Rhino Wugs and one horse who had a Rambo Duo (no neck) with various liners to suit as she's less hardy than the other two. I don't use combo's or neck rugs at all any more as I got fed up with having horses with only half a mane. They are fine without the necks as none of them are clipped.

RE. Wug/half necks, I find them to be a brilliant fit on my LW horses and they do give a bit more protection than a standard neck (not so much rain gets in around the neck) and I've never had a rubbed mane with them. :)

I put other cos I finally found a rug that's a good fit for my boy and it covers all eventualities! :D

He's got a PE buster trio which can be varied, using the detachable liners, from 100g to 450g and also has two weights of detachable neck. It's the only rug we need now!

In the stable: HW combo and then normally a HW combo under rug when it's really cold :)
In the field: the under rug and then rambo duo :)

the 1/2 necks can help stop the mane being rubbed away without having a full neck

I only have MW's, some with necks, some without.

No idea what weight they are, my idea of a MW is one between LW and so darned heavy I can't lift it!
If a horse is cold I just sling another on top, some make it clear that they don't want a blanket at all.

I may have to buy new ones as I think mine are in the haybarn behind about 600 bales :(

I have everything from LW's through to Heavywheights and really does depend on the horse I find some can't have their rugs layered as roll too much and just doesnt sit right so they have to have the right weight of single rug to suit in or out however my oldie and the Retirment livery layering is the only way to keep them warm and luckily their rugs don't seem to move. Ive got every make of rug under the sun Im afraid as they are my version of shoes for the horses but have to be done on a budget. With having 9 recently down to 8 with one of my oldies being PTS they get what fits and works.

Usually middle weights with necks, mainly to keep them clean and dry but the mare also gets a full clip and I try to prevent the full mammoth coat growing on the gelding. I do have heavy weights with necks which I crack out in the snow too ;) The mare has an inbetween medium and heavy rug with neck for the stable but the gelding either has to make do with a fleece and a medium or a turnout rug!:p

My boy spent most of the winter in a PE 300g combo with a 100g liner underneath as necessary. When we hit -18 I put him in his 450g PE but tend to prefer the combination as it doesn't weigh as much and he lives out 24/7.

If the rugs fitted well I prefer to medium weights to one heavy weight but it's hard to find two medium weights which went well together.

I loved the weatherbeeta tristar rugs and was absolutely gutted when they stopped selling them.

My boy came out of last winter with a bit more weight than I would have liked, and a patchy mane! this winter he is getting a medium weight mostly, with no neck. And he does get clipped.

I will use light, medium, and heavy weight rugs this winter. I don't like full necks as I think they are too uncomfortable and tight when the horse wants to eat from the ground or graze. I change the weight according to the weather. My riding horse will have a high blanket or trace clip and be mainly in a high neck heavyweight rug or a medium standard neck rug. My field ornament will be naked or wear a light weight standard neck or medium standard neck depending on temperature and how wet it is. My brood mare will be treated the same as my field ornament.

I've said other because I have all weights and types! I just love rug shopping. So it depends on the temperature and how horrid the weather is. I have a super heavyweight combo, heavyweight combo, mediumweight combo and one with detachable neck amongst Cooper's wardrobe. Havent used the super heavyweight yet as Cooper wasnt in work when the weather got so cold last winter so didnt need it but this year he probably will unless we have mild winter.

My boy will be in a medium weight rug this winter most likely
I might switch to a heavy weight rug, or put a fleece under his medium weight if the weather get's particularly bad.

I don't dare put a neck cover on though. I only got him in April, but last year his old owner had a neck cover on which rubbed off loads of his mane and it's only just starting to grow back now.
I can't bear to go another summer slathering on suncream to protect his sensitive exposed pink bit.

Think skinned TB out from half 4 in morning until 7 or 8 at night. He gets a medium weight with full neck until it goes cold, and then a heavy weight, and over the top a light weight rug if it's raining, which stops the rain going through and soaking them! When snowy he gets a fleece underneath as well... spoilt bugger.

In stable he has under rug with neck and then either light, medium or heavy on top. Youngster is naked unless very wet/cold and then she's in a lightweight turnout with no neck, and a fleece at night if she gets very wet and cold during the day. She may get a little more this winter as she's going to be worked, but not as much as TB ;)

im a massive fan of premier rugs, for fit and quality , but i also have lots of high denier rugs no fill with necks with a good stable rug undneath, mainly so i can wash a re-proof my self, best rugs ive ever had for price at 1800 denier were axomi rugs off ebay no fill with necks, :D

I love my Premier Equine buster trio. I can layer from 100g to 750g if needed, so pony will never go cold. And the detachable neck doesn't rub manes out like a combo often does.

I've put other as I prefer no rug, a lot less hassle and no worrying about changing weights of rug as the temperature changes. But, if I clip I do rug to compensate, normally no heavier than mw though on a trace clipped hairy. I'm hoping to get away with not clipping or rugging this winter if it's anything like last year. I just ended up with loads of unnecessary work for weeks as it was too icy to ride lots of the time.
