Winter Rug Poll - Your choice in rugs!

Last year unfortunately we couldn't use our stables and as D had been clipped he ended up in a 450g heavy weight full neck with a 400g stable rug underneath (plus a cooler rug if snowing) that was the only way we could keep him warm enough at night!
 
I'm with Jenz on the medium combo with lite fill stable rug underneath , i found this really flexible last winter and my boy was out 24/7 as he will be this winter.
 
For my old mare I have Rambos in 0gm, 100gm, 200gm, 360gm and 420 gm, with necks, (preferably necks that can be removed) so I can adjust according to the weather. She lives out 24/7. I don't like layering rugs as they get too heavy for the horse and there's a greater risk of rubbing.
 
i have sold all but 1 stable rug had too many


dont see the point in having so many, they stay in the winter turn out , drys better and they are warm in morning, less washing poo doesnt go through NZ so better all round





all my rugs are FALs now used to do Rambo but they are useless on my horses to tight in chest and not as deep as fal

1 light weight without neck

1 med rug with detach neck
one 3/4 rug with detach

and heavy wight

only the 14 they dont wear in stable cos its a fal goliath 350 pounds so they wear fal godolphin 14oz with under rug


i refuse to put more than 2 layers on my horses to heavy and with fals they are warm without the weight

that said have the last of boys stable rug 6ft tasker green rug with 70z filling 4 sale

I am a self confessed rugaholoic. I appreciate it is unhealthy and a complete waste of money. I need to sign up to RA.

Current horse has the following!!!

Bucus sunshower (no neck) lightweight
Rambo original 200g (no neck)
Rambo Wug 350g? (half neck)
Rambo Supreme 450g? (full neck)

I don't like layering as a rule and I'm not keen on necks unless very cold as I believe it limits a horses ability to regulate their temperature.
 
I vary what rugs I put on my TB depending on the weather, she lives out all year. She has MW and HW standard and combos. But half her mane got rubbed out last year with her Orican (but not with her lighter Aximon), so I'm going to get the the couple more Aximons or maybe a Premier Equine rug that has the liners.

My NF is an oldie so is rugged in a MW in the worst of the weather, as is my cob- despite the fact she grows a coat like a yeti. Both live out all year. I find with my 3 they cope fine with freezing temperatures, but if its wet, they really feel the cold.
 
I have a rather large assortment of rugs :o

The heaviest rug I have is a 300 gram which to me is a heavyweight (she wore it in the coldest part of winter) but to others would be a medium weight.

I prefer to layer rugs rather than put huge, heavy rugs on.
 
Mine are real hotties. Mac will get full clipped Oct time and go into a lightweight, then, when it gets really cold, will go into a medium weight with neck. He is fully clipped and hogged.

Dolly wasn't clipped last year as she wasn't doing a lot of work. She stayed in a lightweigh all winter, and didn't really appreciate having that on. I did put a neck cover on her, but that is mainly because she will find the muddiest part of the field to roll in. Will play it by ear this year as now she is back in full work, she may have a full clip, but depends how much of a coat she grows.

Mine are in at night during the winter.
 
I rug mine according to the conditions on the day, usually varying between their middleweights and heavyweights, with or without their hoods.

I generally don't like layering. Layering with loads of fleeces isn't something I do. This system doesn't breath, and having multiple layers of buckles and straps is dangerous, and the horses with layers of rugs are usually the horses who have the worse rubbed out shoulder and manes, so it can't be comfortable. Also, the combined weight of several layers will be more than a slighly heavier rug to keep the horse adequately warm. ..... IN MY OWN HUMBLE OPINION! :)

Another rug-aholic.... My wimpy TB will go through the lot by the end of the winter!

For turnout he has a LW no fill with no neck (can be layered with fleece if needed), MW with neck (250g) and a HW (400g) with neck. Last winter he ended up in the MW with the HW over the top when in and out when the temp dropped to -18/20. I am considering splashing out and getting a PE Buster trio to make life easier this winter and have spares as he is a mucky devil.
