Winter Rugging solutions?

Preferably solutions to the problem of reaching spring, to find your horse only has 6 inches of mane left

Need to start saving (I have my eye on some turquoise rugs! More colour co-ordination!) fairly quickly for winter rugs for Dan - he trashed most of them last year.... But would prefer him to have some mane left this year, but he still needs to be warm, he's a wuss, and gets all shivery quite easily when it's cold *sigh*

So, what works for you when your clipped horsies get cold?

I use either a Snuggy Hoods or Thermatex turnout hood, it stops the mane from geting rubbed by fully necked TO rugs. They have lycra hoods under their stable rugs. Takes a bit of time changing over AM and PM, and you get wet and soggy, but it is worth it to have some mane left by Spring!

I have the snuggy hood turn out hood to go under turnouts, it is fab! Have just normal lycra hoods for under stable rugs.

I'm going to buy a bossy's bib this winter however that's more for shoulders/withers.

Hoods sound like the way forward..... Though has anyone found a way to stop the lycra ones from slipping?? Dan always seems to do strange things with his and end up with them twisted or slipping over his eye or something daft....

I've found the normal lycra ones sometimes do that (which is why they are stable use only). The snuggy hoods turnout one (I have it with ears too as she is a grey mud monster!) has never moved an inch. If it doesn't fit perfectly then they do alterations for you too.

Make sure they fit properly. I tie the eye and ear holes together so make the eye holes bigger and less likely to slip around. If it is too big it will slip, if it is too small the eye holes wont line up properly.

not exactly rug related, but I find that spraying copious amounts of Mane & Tail onto my boys mane daily seems to make it stronger and stop it breaking under his rug.

Going to take a look at the Snuggy hoods turnout hoods now, and will dig the lycra hood out shortly to see how it fits.
Just out of curiousity, has anyone ever tried fixing a lycra hood to a field safe headcollar for use in the stable? Just thinking this might help stop it from moving a little

Will also make sure he has a lovely conditioned mane!

I saw some sort of neck/mane covers in the Supreme Products stand at a show recently, assume they will have them on their website - don't think they were cheap though!
