Hiya all,

I know it's a tad early but just wondering what kind of rugs to invest in for my lad. He's a 4 year old ish. I don't plan on clipping him but he's been rugged in the past and he's not in work so I'm unsure.
Also good recommendations would be appreciated as I've been out of the game for a little bit.

Thanks :)

Now is a good time to buy winter rugs. Bargains can be found out of season. :) I would probably look for a LW/no-fill, a low fill (eg 100g, a liner to go in the no-fill would work too) and a MW (200 to 250g). I had 100g rugs for the first time last winter and used them loads as it was so wet, but not very cold.

Do keep in mind though that your horse may outgrow any rugs that you buy now by the time he's fully grown.

When I had growing youngsters I stalked ebay and my local tack shop for bargains. I try to get 1000d outers or higher (Horseware, Shires and Weatherbeeta are all good) as they are tougher and more waterproof IME. My best bargains have been on ebay.

I agree the higher denier turnout rugs are best. I am a fan of using under-rugs as they give you more flexibility plus it is easy to wash the under-rug in a domestic washing machine. So a good starter wardrobe could be a 1200 denier no fill turnout rug and a 100g under-rug. The turnout can be used on its own, or if more warmth is needed, the under-rug can be put on underneath. If you are in chilly area, if the horse is clipped or feels the cold easily, then you might need a middleweight turnout and again you can use an under-rug with it. So with a wardrobe of a no fill turnout, a 100g under-rug and a 200g MW turnout, you can create the following weights:

No fill
100g
200g
300g
Plus if you get an under rug with surcingles you can use use it as a lightweight stable rug as well.
