Winter turnout - How much/how long does your horse get?

On a livery yard and Elvis goes out every day 8.30-4.30 all winter. He's in a good sized field on his own with company over the fence. Field is still okay and no need for hay yet, gateway is a bit sludgy. The only time he'll stay in is when it snows or when the shoot is around.
 
My field already resembles a bog so I brought the horses on to the hard standing area about a week ago, they will get to go out in the field intermittantly and have a play in the school every couple of days. The weather was so bad last week that even the shetlands wanted to come in LOL
 
Exactly the same that they do over Summer.

In field by 6.30am Mon to Fri, in by 3.30pm Mon to Fri and roughly 7am-2pm at weekends. Although if weather horrid (IE sleeting, windy and cold at same time), they are brought in earlier as 2 are fair weather poor doers and they just don't enjoy being out in that!

Fields are great, they are now on the winter side with fatty Unicorn in a muzzle and livery pony strip grazing his paddock as lami prone. Sandy soil and ours are barefoot (except livery pony) which really helps.
 
I rent my own yard, mine are currently out about 3 hours a day, more on a weekend if the weather is calm. I have good grass at the moment but the fields do get very wet quickly. All 3 of mine are more than happy with their routine, 2 are companions and my mare gets ridden usually 5 days a week for at least an hour and a half hack. Today they didn't go out, the weather was blowing a gale and it was hailstoning so they have all been out of their stables on the yard and my mare has been walked in hand. If I had put her out, she would have freaked as she hates the wind, and that puts my safety at risk bringing her in as she becomes a bit of a handful! I am lucky that I have big stables with a lovely outlook across fields so lot for them to see, and the yard is warm because it gets the low sun in the stables all day.
 
Mine go out at 6am and come in at 4.30pm. No restrictions on turnout times but, during winter you do have to bring in at night. Fields all on sandy soil and no mud whatsoever :) All horses go out everyday no matter what the weather - YO doesn't like horses left in because when they go out, the excitement makes them run round and trash the fields.
 
we are very lucky to have free rein at our yard and can choose to either leave in or out 24/7 all year round, last year I had only one stable and two horses, so left them out pretty much all the time, they have a large winter field on a slope and a field shelter at the top, which is always warm and dry inside. this year I have two stables, (as someone left) and have been bringing them both in more, but during the day in the summer when very hot and to manage their weight. likewise when the weather is bad might pop them in for the odd night, but mostly they stay out or just come in for the day (06.30 till 4pm ish) they are always more than happy to get back outside again :-). the field can get wet and muddy at the bottom by the gate, but I poop pick everyday it always recovers in the summer, so no one worries. thankfully! we are so lucky with the yard pelnty of space and 500 acres of hacking, but only big downside is no school, ( we have become quite adept at riding in the semi dark or dark though in one of the fields ;-)
 
Just been brought in to the big 25 x 40m pens with partial covering with ad lib hay until fencing is sorted, then will be out for about 4 hours then brought back into the pens.
 
Ours have 9-11 hours turnout per day. Some have to be in by 4pm and the rest by 6pm but no restriction on what time they can go out in the morning. Downside to this is bt Christmas fields are usually pretty much trashed, especially the lads! But at least they are guaranteed to get out every day no matter what the weather
 
On a private yard with just one other horse and owner. Horses in separate fields but can touch over the fence.

Mid/late Spring to Autumn is 24/7 and then in Winter out at 6.30am and in around 5.30pm. My field is pretty muddy by the gateway - which is at the bottom of the hill so all water drains down. Other than that, they are holding up well.
 
Do horses actually like standing in mud all day long in the pouring rain though? Mine certainly wouldn't, although I never allow my fields to get to that state. I think that as long as they have a routine, horses are quite happy to have restricted turnout over the winter months. I also haven't had a case of mudfever on my yard in 20 years!!
 
Currently out at 8.30 and in about 4.. If the weather is awfull they don't go out, they have a burst on the horse walker and graze in hand. They don't mind this routine.
Ideally I would have them brought in at 1pm and ride in the evening, but the yard has no arena :(
 
Currerntly in during the day with a deep straw bed and plenty of hay. they are still out at night, 2 horses on 5 acres so land holding up well. Not rugged as yet as very hairy native and nativex. will rug if necessary and will stable overnight if/when weather dictates. Always go out ech day though, minimum of 8 hours even in severe snow.
 
On a small private livery horses, 3 horses in individual paddocks and mine is with one other in a huge field. They all go out between 7 and 8am, and come in between 4 and 5.30pm. They will get shorter TO times as the weather gets worse but it's rare TO is restricted.
 
11 to 12 hours average a day, every day in winter unless I literally cannot get them to field in snow. Sometimes less time weekends as maybe up slightly later am and earlier pm but my youngster prefers out and oldie gets stiff if in too long.

Only my two and sister's boy in fairly sizeable well draining good grass field so never any problems with grazing or mud. Farmer may restrict if seriously bad but never has yet.
 
Im on DIY but we've all got our own little bit and the YO doesnt mind how we manage it. Ive decided to change the way I do things this year and am bringing my 2 in at 7am and putting them back out about 3pm. They are both natives so well able to cope but we are on clay and I figure that by turning them out at night when there are less folk about they are less likely to hover in the gateway hoping some kind soul will chuck them some hay. This way I can also feed them inside and avoid wasting hay in the field. So far so good.
 
My boys are out from about 7:30 to 2. The fields are holding up fairly well (chalk soil) but they do stay in when the weather is totally atrocious to try and save the fields. They seem happy :) At my last yard it was 9-12 which wasn't really enough for me, hence the move.
 
It has varied over the years! However at current yard and with 4 horses they are on a '2 in 2 out' basis mainly because the field is a 5 min walk away!
My ex-racer who I've got on loan has decided she doesn't want to go out so she's now in all the time and just comes out for exercise which she is very happy with. Soon as it dries up enough though I'm making her go back out!
The youngster goes out everyday with either my welsh or cob mare they do alternate days.
When turned out they go out from about 7/half 7 (am) until 1/2 ish in the afternoon. Always keen to come in by the time I get there!

The youngster is going to her new home Saturday though, so if madam staying in gets stressy without a friend left in with her we will have some re-evaluating to do !
 
Mare is out from about 8am until 4pm. YO will leave in if weather is really bad. Youngster is out 24/7 in a large field with hay and shelter with 7 others until January when they come into a barn to rest the fields for a while.
 
Mine is out 24/7 in the summer but as soon as the weather gets cooler, she wont stay out. She walks the fence line constantly even though she has company next door and a hay hutch full of hay and haylage. She managed from 7.30am til 10am this morning but just wants to be in her stable, even though there are no other horses in then. I have given up trying to get her to spend all day out but it is very time consuming, as I feel that as she has been cooped up for a lot of hours, I have to work her every day. Luckily we have a walker which she absolutely loves. She is just very strange lol
 
I don't think she's strange, just knows what she wants!! I can't see any point in a horse being more stressed by being left out in a field when it doesn't want to be there. My mare is like this, if the weather is calm, she's fine. If it's even a hint of that nasty north wind then she won't settle and if it's really windy then she would rather stay in the warm. I take each day in winter as it comes, and mine pretty much go out every day, but are none the worse for the odd day in!
 
One pony on 2 acres heavy clay but currently in about 2/3 of an acre and moving fence out a few foot a day to eke out the grass, has access to hard standing and stable 24/7 and shut up on hard standing with hay and an open stable from 9pm to 7am to save my field.
