Winter turnout - What do you have?

All year turnout, except for when we worm (in for 36 hours) and in once a year (morning only) for when the shoot comes into the fields. We have daily turnout in the winter and 24/7 in the summer.
The only time they came in early one day and stayed in until the following afternoon was following torrential rain and even the horses could understand why! We are lucky that the fields are on chalk and on top of a hill with good winds to dry them out quickly, the gateways have rubble underneath and I have yet to see mud above 3" this year.

I am also sure that the owner would allow us to sacrifice a small area of land if needed as turnout whilst mucking out if it ever came to that - I suppose it is easier the more land you have?

In at night, out during the day.. mine's out on 10 acres with two others.

Unfortunately it would appear that through personal choice rather than yard rules no one will turn out if there's heavy rain etc which is a shame because horse has been out 24/7 throughout winter on previous yards and would rather be out at least for a few hours than stuck in a stable :o.

24/7 365 turnout if I want. My horses go out at 6am - 3.30pm in the winter and wheather permitting out 24/7 from the end of march untill late autumn.

I would never condsider a yard that didn't give me the choice of 24/7 turnout all year round.

We manage 3 native ponies on 3 acres. We have 2 small designated trash paddocks, 1 of which is hardcored, and a summer field split into 2, 1 area twice the size of the other. Grass seems to grow well here so shouldn't be a problem.
Ponies are living out, only come in overnight if weather is horrendous! They have hay twice a day in the winter,

My gelding on a yard at moment for first winter until I get to know him and he has a 6 acre field for him and a 11.2hh companion. I keep him out during day and in at night, when dried up he will be out 24/7 from April onwards.
When I bring him home for next winter he will have no turnout on grass but I have a barn and outdoor area for him to roll and mooch about in but not in a field so to speak.
Dont like them in all the time...he was on box rest and it did his head in! LOL

We have 3 paddocks (4 acres) and rent another 2 (4 acres)
so we are quite lucky in that we have had plenty of grass all winter so fields arent a mess and horses are actually sane!
They have all been in at night and out from 7- 5 each day. exmoor is starting to show signs she wants to start staying out 24/7 again tho but are waiting till march when it will hopefully be a little warmer at night.

After years on yards with restricted turnout, I moved to a yard with proper turnout all year round.

It's not the best, we have trash fields that need haying, but thet can be out all day. No good if your horse gets mudfever (mine don't)

It's been a godsend this year with me being on crutches, no way could I cope with restricted turnout in my current state. Next year I probably will keep them in a bit more though.

We are on heavy clay, and when I moved to the yard was told that they turn out through the winter unless its very bad. Actually, they were in when it was snowy, then in cos of the meltwater, then after a couple of turnouts one week they were in again for 10 days cos it was too wet.......My saint of a horse changed to a stroppy grumpy monster. The horses on full livery were turned out in the school while they were mucked out, but us DIY'ers were unable to do that as when we mucked out in the evening someone was always riding.

Needless to say, I have now moved yards, and my horse had a happy day out in his new field rolling in all the mud he could find.

We have our own fields for differing amounts of horses on our DIY yard which range from 2-5 horses depending on the size of the field. We can do what we like with our field such as mucking it out/ turning out etc so my 2 and my friends horse are out all day every day in any weather- as are most on the yard. Some are even living out still!

I couldn't be at a yard with restricted turnout I much prefer my boys out as much as possible!

I rent a field from a farmer to avoid turnout issues as my lad could not cope being shut up day and night. He is out all year round no matter what the weather from 5.30 am through to 7pm. He only comes in at night to give him some hay and take him off the grass as he has had laminitis in the past and I find it a good way to ensure his weight stays right. If it were not for the laminitis problem he would be out 24/7 all year round.

Turnout every day of the year in well managed fields with way less mud than we have the right to have! Just right by the gateways in some of the fields, or along some of the fencelines, but otherwise we're high and dry with fab drainage.

We were only asked to leave them in once during the snow, when the tracks to the field were too icy for walking the horses, but that's it.

I have no complaints at all, especially as the fields are poo picked as regularly during the winter as they are in the summer :)

The winter paddocks are all rested during the summer so that's got a lot to do with it too.

I wouldn't consider being anywhere without access to turnout;
Mine are pampered and spend the day out in their field and come in at night time, I feel very lucky to have family with a farm! :D

On my yard i allow my liveries daily turnout in winter - there are no time restrictions on what time they are turned out or brought in.
Then in summer its 24/7 for if they want to leave them out, or bring in as they wish.
Our winter field is still green but with a bit of mud at the gate :)
