I know this has probably been done to death, but I am doing some market research for Springy's winter rug.

I want either a full neck or a detachable neck as she is a mucky little monster and a medium weight (don't think we will need a heavy weight as she won't be fully clipped).

Bearing in mind she is a big horse (6'6 - 6'9) and has large shoulders and a rather large behind,

which brand would you reccommend? Please can you reply and put which style/model you have and pros and cons.

Thanks.

Bailey had weatherbeeta and it was great, cant comment on the neck cover though but the rug itself was brill.

Fit large on shoulders and bum and was quite deep. Didnt rip and came up like brand new when washed and re proofed.

This would have been its 3rd year on him this winter but hes gone now, it went with him so i would think it will do him a few years yet!

I have bought a masta for Red, because it was on offer, fits nice but cant comment on durability etc because havent needed it yet!

My cob has both Rambo and Rhino rugs love them. Used to have a Masta with detachable neck, but the neck used to blow up in wind, so rain got between rug and neck cover. Also tried a Weatherbeeta Landa Combo for about 4 days, but rug kept going back, making it tight across her chest, it had also rubbed her loins bald by the 4th day, so stopped using it.

To be honest with turnouts I've always found you get what you pay for.
Maybe I've just had overly destructive horses, but only the horseware and fal rugs have lasted longer then one winter for me.
Personally I love Rambo's!

Voted Masta but like equally Mark Todd and Premier Equine personally wouldn't touch Rambo or Fal with a bargepole as in my experience you are only paying for the name - both I've had haven't lasted as long as Masta, leaked and generally were not well cut (on different animals)

I voted 'other'

Can thoroughly recommend the Premier Equine rugs....ads in HH at the moment. Ive got the super duper heavyweight with integral neck for Tom and its superior quality for the price. They now also do a mid weight and a light weight with necks included and are at near trade prices for the quality you get.

Mine didnt leak, rub or move last winter and is a generous fit. I reckon they could be a very good shape for Springy.

well, I love Amigos but V is pretty narrow and I really dont see how they would fit something of bigger proportions-maybe avoid those!

Thanks Spaniel, I have a lightweight that I bought when I got her. Both the heavyweight and medium weight look promising and seem pretty good value, I like the snazzy colours as well!

Lucy I think I payed about £80 for my heavyweight PE rug and if you told me it was £200 Id believe you. Brilliant value IMO.

My middleweight ID X TB had a brand new Weatherbeeta Landa Lite last week - it rained a little overnight so I whacked it on, and by the morning it had slid right back and to one side, the velcro at the front had come undone and the material had rucked up over the points of her shoulders, and where the shoulder darts are for the freestyle thing the lining pulled back and pulled the shoulders in on themselves. I was very unimpressed and now have to get it cleaned and eBay it!
So now Maiden has two brand new Mark Todds, I had them for my broad Welsh Cob and they fitted a treat, and Maiden had her lightweight on last night and it didn't budge, was still roomy round her front this morning as it hadn't slipped back, it hadn't rubbed, and most importantly she was dry!
I'd reccommend the Mark Todds, only thing is my l/w neck cover will be navy blue and when it gets put on her middleweight blue/grey check rug in the depths of winter I bet she's going to look silly! But hey ho!
The other rugs that fitted Maiden were the Fals, I borrowed my friend's to try on and it fitted very snugly. Obviously I couldn't give it a trial run but my instructor has had her Fal Bulldogs for literally years and years. The only other problem with them is the price!

Fal - Used their stable rug (which is fabulous, really deep cosy fit and has lastest years). Also have a high neck Fal. Dont use it much anymore, it fitted my WB however I have new horses now and it doesnt seem to fit either well! Its too narrow for my chunky horse, EVEN with the chest extender. On my TB, it is TOO tight without the chest bit and TOO loose with it! It is a very cosy, deep rug though. I do use it if I have to as an emergency rug. Its just the fact that the front doesnt fit right...... It is quite an old FAL though so maybe they've improved by now.

Rambo - Well I only have 1 rug by them which is actually their Sweet Itch Hoody which is pretty good. Cant comment on turnouts!

Rhino - Never used.

Amigo - Have their lightweight summer turnout which is fabulous! Excellent quality, is the ONLY summer rug I have found NOT to leak at all in a down pour. Really really good. So I assume their winter ones would be fab too!

Masta - HATE THESE with avengence! Had a winter one years ago which was terrible. It leaked like hell and eventually ended up being ripped to shreds (by a horse who doesnt even trash rugs!). Terrible quality. Will never buy Masta again, even if they have improved (although heard they havent). Although remember the rug fitted ok....!!

Weatherbeeta - Super rugs. Have 2 Oricans (standard - currently trying to buy the neck parts) and 1 Arion Combo. The Arion (old version) has been used solidly through 2 winters now with no damage at all! No leakage, fits my TB really well. Only thing Ive found it the nylon inside (although makes their coat shiny) got very greasy and ended up making horses mane really yucky!! But this is probably due to me having a grubby horse or not washing it enough! Oricans (new style) have been great for my nativey jobs. Both fit really well. One has been ripped a few times but it is on a trashy-horse. Would definately buy again.

Mark Todd - Never used.

Excellent, they have a sale on at the minute and the HW is £69.99 and the medium weight is £49.99. I could get both for less than one Rambo

ETA. How do the sizings come up? Spring will sometimes be a 6'6" or sometimes a 6'9", would it be worth going bigger or smaller in your opinion? I feel a spending spree coming on!

Im used to rugs coming up a bit tight so went for the 6'3 its a bit long in the neck so a 6 (normally his measurement) wouldve done. To be honest they come on overnight delivery so if you needed to swap it wouldnt take long.

Id measure her and go true to size.

Love Rambo, closely followed by Weatherbeeta. Bought a Rambo original in 1998 when I got my older horse and it's still going strong with only minor repairs needed to buckles etc. I think you get what you pay for - I loathe Masta and Shires which I've tried and neither lasted a full winter.

A vote for either Rambo or Fal - both fit very well, keep them warm and if looked after properly keep going for years & years

Just bought a Weathebeeta Landa Light - fit is brilliant. The ginger one has v big shoulders for her size, and a round bum, and it fits really well, as do the fusion range (Have the stable rug).

Masta - not a fan. Had a lighweight and hated it and stable rug was too tight on shoulders. If you look on the photos, they come up very high on the chest and I think they'd really dig in when they were grazing.

Have heard very good things about the sizing etc on Mark Todd rugs, its on my short list for winter with a seperate neck - either that or the Weatherbeeta Taka with a seperate neck.

Asti still has her old Worldbeater rug that my mum bought us 11 years ago! STill in reasonable nick, just a patch or two!

I got Josie a Saxon medium weight combo last year. Was only about £50 I think? I it gorgeous!! She has wide wide shoulders and a huge bum but is only 5' 9 so was really struggling to find something to fit. She was never wet or cold and we had no rubs. I'm going to see if I can get another 1 this year to use as a stable rug!!
