Now I'm back in the saddle and loving it with my new loan I need to prepare for the winter months (winter is coming...*) !

Can anyone recommend a pair of good quality but reasonably priced (not happy spending over £150) which can be used for yard and riding? I have a pair of woof wear boots for traipsing around the yard so just for riding and to and from stable mostly.

I would also welcome recommendations for WARM (I really feel the cold) winter jackets that are comfortable to ride in (I always end up buying something that is never comfortable to ride in).

Oh and anyone know of any warm comfortable (waterproof?) jodphurs?

Basically need a whole new wardrobe!

* sorry game of thrones reference!

No recommendations on boots as I'm a welly girl and swap when I ride

I've given up buying proper horsey branded jacket as they are expensive and get ruined. So got a good waterproof in sports direct last yr. First time I wore it my horse bit the hood and ripped it half off. But still worked well

Just make sure you have a couple for when you get soaked in the rain :)

Avoid Rambo waterproof trousers with the side zip - the new version has a front zip and different fabric which I believe is due to the issues with the old style (zip a pain to do up then comes down while riding and they leak!). Was in a shop today and they had both types in stock.

Berghaus for short jackets I think. I've just bought a long wax coat after today's soaking. Mainly you need hundreds of good ones so you have enough to change/the right one for the weather.

Good thermals could be your friend. I love my Pikeur Lugana soft shell winter weight breeches. I also swear by Musto jackets which I wear with my ski thermals and tops.

Get a good hat. I know I sound like a grandma, but nothing keeps you warmer. I head straight for the men's section in TKMaxx (I don't have a particularly big head but can usually find something to fit) I also love those neck wrap things. I forget their proper name but they're great for keeping wind and rain off the neck. Nothing on your list, sorry, two essentials for me.

I also stopped buying branded horsey jackets. They don't last! Go outdoors sell a winter coat for about £25 and has three different layers so you can add or take off. I also feel the cold and this is the best coat I've ever had! Instead of buying waterproof jodhpurs buy a pair of thermals to wear under your jodhpurs and then wear waterproof trousers on top. If you really feel cold as badly as I do wear ski trousers which are surprisingly comy to ride in!

For boots go outdoors also sell snow/ walking boots. or there cheap version which work just as well but are only ankle boots. If your interested the own brand ones are called duck boots.

You can't go wrong with a musto coat, I've had 2 combo jackets and they've lasted years of abuse.
Mountain horse high riders are good and long lasting.
Wear layers, then you can peel accordingly!!!
Earmuffs or a fleece lined hat.
Ssealskins are good but too pricey to be abused, I buy cheap leather gloves with a fleecy lining and put hospital gloves over the top.

^^ this, but buy breathable waterproofs otherwise they sweat and you'll still end up wet. I used to get cheap ones from millets and they has a zip up the side so you could get them on and off without taking your boots off.

Thermal wellies for yard, mountain horse high rider for riding, puffa jacket for v cold weather, sealskinz beanie which covers ears and is waterproof, their gloves are great too just keep eye out for sale. Change of clothes at yard especially jods, over trousers for all yard duties whcih keeps you clean and dry.

I would really recommend either M&S heatgen or uniqlo heattech thermals. They are really thin and you wouldn't think they would be warm enough but they are great. Perfect for under jods/jackets. My Musto coat is about 10 years old and still going strong.

Are the mountain horse and musto jackets good to ride in too? All waterproof jackets I've had have been uncomfortable to ride in. Maybe various layers and options is the way forward and not a one for all sort of coat!

I treated myself to a pair of Sealskins riding gloves and they really are fab, totally worth it- for mucking out I use my big thermal cycling gloves which have lasted a couple of years.
I love my ear warmers and also my knitted welly socks- I too need a new coat though so might just try a ski jacket, I love buying nice horsey coats but I don't like doing the mucking out in them! 😬

I have a toggi coat that is doing well (hope I haven't jinxed it!) Got it in the sale. It has a removable fleece liner so is essentially 3 in 1.

I have mountain horse fleece lined boots. Can't remember the name but they are tough fabric upper with a waterproof lower bit. They were fab when I first got them but after a year they have already started to leak and they drop, they don't stay up well. So wouldn't recommend them now!

Invest in some thermals. I have some for under jods that have stirrups so they don't ride up when you put jods on and have fleece panels on the outer thigh. Also have some shires fleece lined chaps. Super snug in those!

I also have a fleece neck warmer that has a cotton liner you can pull up over the nose and a fleece hood.

Or, you could be a total (but warm) slob and just get snow pants, or suit :)

I live (and ride) in my snow pants and ski jackets in winter. Easy to wash, easy to dry, and cheap.

Hubby has tally ho waterproof breeches. Great review from him. Horseware sell them.

I love my musto riding jacket but the newer ones all seem very short so don't know what I will do when I need a new one..

We both have muck boots and change for riding. Ive got equiflect jodhpur boots with a steel toe cap which are insulated and v warm.

I need a new coat and I have no idea what to buy. I too loved my old musto but it gave up the ghost and I want the same but new, but they don't do them.

I also fancy some waterproof warm riding trousers. Not sure what make to go for though!!!

I use ski salopettes and a ski jacket for farm duties and I have snow boots for really bad weather (normally I'm happy in wellies). It means I can strip of to ride and be clean. I prefer to layer for riding and wear base layers and microfleece.

Cor, you guys are making me feel cold :(

Mountain Horse do 2 types of winter boot - the Rimfrost Rider and the Stella Polaris... have been tempted by them for the last few years, but my Muck Boots keep my feet super toasty I can't justify getting a new pair of boots until they wear out. This will be there 3rd winter with hardly any signs of wear and tear so can't fault them for sturdiness!

Layers, layers, layers. I hate wearing one big coat so I have lots of fleeces and varying weights of gilet, then coat on top. I get too hot the moment I start to do anything so need to be able to remove layers!

My attire this winter will be all my offshore sailing gear. Very warm and fully waterproof but also good to move around in as it needs to be when clambering around the tight deck space of a yacht. Can be obtained pretty cheap going in to winter second hand on ebay. Sailing is a fashion sport so a lot of this gear is changed every year despite hardly being used. New you do pay but still worth it.

I love my colt Ryder muck boots (think they are thermal too?), you can ride in them it says but I generally swop boots to ride in. I gave up years ago wasting money on equestrian branded coats, they're ridiculously expensive, I've got coats from the outdoor shops (regatta etc) from the outlet villages for around £20 and they do the job fine and have the double zip thing that allows it to be unzipped from the bottom to ride in too.

If you go for waterproofs definitely get breathable ones, I've got ones that aren't and boy they make you sweat in the coldest weather (not a great idea as you then get cold!).

Mark Todd padded over trousers, mine have lasted for years and I have a new pair ready and waiting in the cupboard. I wear mine all day at work, which is a feed merchants, and underneath are long johns, and I'm always warm and dry. I think they're called Reinga, or similar.

Must I snug blouson, not the most stylish but super warm.

Rambo fleece lined chaps are nice and easy to put on over boots as well as good cover up if you want to wear your normal clothes to the yard!

Tally ho waterproof fleece lined breeches are fab, got a cream paid for hunting as well as a black pair, I fell in a ditch out hunting sat in water and still wasn't wet or cold!

Musto thermal jods (not sure what they are called now) brought mine 4 years ago still like new and the warmest comfiest jods I own!
Sheep skin liners (eBay!) for wellies and muckers really made a difference last winter never had such toasty toes. Thermal vests & seal skins waterproof gloves super warm and your hands stay dry even if your digging ice out trough :)

super cosy tights from primark are my best friend in winter- they sell them every year for about £4... basically fleece lined tights, i wear them under jods and they keep me sooo toasty
