Wire fencing issues

How do you manage your wire fences, new yard has two strands of wire as fencing and I'm unsure of how to stop a youngester 'playing' in it.

My first thought was to tie ribbon on the wire, it has two strands the first about 2'6 the second at 4'6.

Or do I make in paddock with in paddock with ele fencing and poly posts

Or use the instuator extander things and tape.

Please note this is a livery and may need to move paddocks at one point.
 
Personally, I would electric fence about 2 foot inside the wire fence all the way around with the plastic poles. I hate wire fencing and by using electric fencing you can take it with you when / if you need to move fields =)
 
After a friend's horse broke his shoulder going over a wire fence, I would electric tape inside it.
We have sheep wire mesh in some of our fields, all of it has a string of electric tape in front if and when horses go in those fields. Wire can be very unforgiving.
 
Think I'm going to go down the poly post route, just told my OH that I'm going to spend more money, but he shocked me by saying 'well if it saves a vet bill, the the horse is safe and happy' good job it was pay day on fri!
 
electric fence it - horses are stoopid when excited - i have seen a horse break its neck in the first 20 mins of being let loose in its new field with its new owner due to wire - taz almost died because of wire fencing - its just not worth the risk IMO
 
All my fences are stockwire about 4'6" high - keeps little ponies and goats in, and coyotes and (sometimes) deer out.

All have hot wire at various heights depending on the occupants...some have to be persuaded not to lean over, some not to stand on the stuff, and others not to rub their bums on it.

I would love pretty post and rail fences, or the plastic alternative, I am well aware of the dangers of stockwire but I have little option, I simply can't afford the pretty stuff - I am on a corner lot, our perimeter fencing is 1.5 kms alone.
 
We had barbed wire on our place before we redid with plain wire. The plain wire is tight and electrified the first three (top strands). As the wire itself is electrified, (we did not use tape, not enough of a kick), the horses are very careful not to touch it. ( i do get zapped from time to time)

Prior to electrifying the actual fence wire, we used offsets from the fence posts and ran a strand of electrified wire on both sides of all the fences. This offset was about 6-8" from the fence. We had to rely on this for 6 months and had no injuries. In the sections where the worst fencing was (some of the corners) we put in star picket posts (with the plastic caps), and ran electric wire along those, to keep them right out and away from the fence.

My ISH will destroy/lean on a fence - walk (well usually canter) through electric tape fences, unless they have a huge kick in them. The tape tends not to have enough of a kick compared to wire. (I used a tape gate about 5-8cm wide yesterday, closed it up had not put the fence back on, and he shot through it without even pausing- snapping the tape).

I would be wanting to ensure that the youngster develops a healthy respect for fences, so the inner fence, or the offset wire must be strong enough zap to stop him testing the fence.

Well we've gone around the field and put 'flags' on the wire, think he had a kick from it last night as very wary of it today. And also put an extra fence of electric tape up around the whole field, which isn't as yet on as going to ask the yard owner if I can run it off the mains like the wire is.
So all happy now, must say I'm not a fan of wirr fences.
 
Well as Kali took a slice off his fetlock kicking out at a wire fence I'm not a huge fan. Took ages to heal. Hate the stuff and would put up electric tape in front of it to discourage any kind of interaction.

i have stock fencing around 2 of the smaller paddocks, people before us had mini shetlands and it was the only way they could keep them in. We have electric tape about a foot away from it all around to keep our ponies away from it but it proved invaluable with my daughters old pony who would just walk through electric tape for fun:rolleyes:
