End of last year, my horse got caught in wire and cut his pastern. Vet came out, said he didn't need stitches, dressed it with Ligasano and bandaged. The wound healed quite nicely. BUT. Today, after horse has been lame on and off since then, I got an x-ray done. He has got actual pieces of WIRE in his pastern. Vet says we must do surgery as soon as possible.

Has anyone had ANY experience with something like this?

The x-ray.

oh dear. I'd certainly raise a query with the original vet but it would be a very unusual occurance and most wire cuts wouldn't be x-rayed unless the horse was lame so this would be missed- think you've been very unlucky ! Hope he is insured!

I know. I was furious with the first vet at first, but in actual fact, it wasn't his fault. This just looked like a normal wound - put a bandage on, change it every day and he'll be fine in a few weeks. There were no obvious puncture wound sites - the main wound was much further down.

He is insured, but for life threatening surgery only, so this is for my account...

Is it the same vet? I'd be asking how they missed it. Wishing your horse a speedy recovery.

It's incredibly easy to miss something like this without an x ray from the start when the wound looks clean and well.
Years ago, I used to cut cheese with a cheese wire which broke and went into my finger. Loads of blood, cue me fainting but looked and felt clean, healed well. Over a year later finger started aching especially if I knocked it; it festered and out popped a length of cheese wire which I didn't know was there at all.

I would be miffed at your vet, they should have felt i it inside his leg. Was the horse cut out the wire or did it free itself?
