If I don't post tomorrow I'm probably in hospital - or dead.
My nappy, spinning, slightly deranged TB mare went lame and has been off work since about end of Sept last year. After £600 of investigations, it turned out to be an abscess. I've done six weeks of long-reining round the roads and after the physio treatment on Thursday I've been given the all clear to get back on tomorrow. I've chosen Sunday morning as it's the quietest time on the road and am hoping to set off about 7am on a circular 40 minute route. The friend who was supposed to be riding out with me has pleurisy so I'm on my own. Am I allowed to imagine that you're all there with me, riding at the side of me please? Feeling excited, but also slightly sick......need your forward going, non-nappy vibes please!

*forward going but non nappy* vibes on the way :D

I have a TB x mare who has been out of work since August last year due to bad concussive laminitis who is a bit of a knob out hacking so understand the feeling of trepidation and excitement at getting back on board :D

Haven't been back on mine yet

Sing a song for you both, it'll calm you down! Can you not get someone to come with you on foot? Or on a bike?

1. " whenever i am afraid i whistle a happy tune"

2. grit your teeth together it looks like a huge smile from a distance

3. Superglue your bottom to the saddle and if all else fails grab some mane :D

I bet she will surprise you and will be perfect ;)

OH offered to come with me, but to be honest I think I'm better on my own. The roads are really quiet round here in the early mornings, especially on Sundays and OH has a dodgy knee and can't keep up which means I have to keep waiting for him, which isn't the best thing to have to do if she's in a nappy mood. In all fairness to her, she's been an angel on the long-reins so I do feel more confident than when I had to bring her into work last year....we think she originally started napping as a pain issue in her hooves - she didn't go lame in the early stages, but was then diagnosed with navicular, PSLD, spavin and arthritis of the fetlock, so it then turned into a learned behaviour and took a lot of patience and time to stop her doing it. And then just as she had almost stopped completely again, the abscess started!

I'm going to get on and the whole ride think about getting home and logging on to see if you've got your BOGOF yet! I do keep checking!

Think you could be pleasantly surprised - my crack pot ex racer is fantastic regardless of length of time off (well no worse anyway)

Good luck, be positive and have a blooming great time! :-)

Good luck :) it probably won't be as bad as you think. I took my friend's horse out in my own last week after hed had a two month lay off. He was really well behaved. I'd never ridden alone before so there was lots of chatter and reassurance going on to distract us both. :o enjoy :)

Good Luck!! I sat on my mare yesterday for first time since last August due to her been lame and me having surgery. To say I was a bit anxious was an understatement as she is forward going at the best of times! Half way down the road, the thought came into my head that maybe the body protector should have been worn! But, all went well, just got home quicker than intended!

Have fun and enjoy!

I have a tb who broke his leg 2 years ago and was out of work for 8 months. We couldn't lunge due to his injury so had to just get back on .....

And he was a total angel :) didn't put a hoof wrong and hasn't since. :)

Well I got back alive! She was fine to get on and didn't even try to nap - in fact after the first five minutes she spent the whole time jogging and when I tried to tell her that she wasn't allowed to jog decided that head tossing would be a great alternative. I did think at one time towards home that she was going to start having a bit of a bronc, but she held it together ok. It felt very strange after riding the 14hh round cob going back to the TB....
