for Wednesday, I have the day off to take Henry to see a local gundog trainer - eeeep!

She thinks we are going to talk to her about recall but in the intervening time since speaking to her Henry has been being a good boy again - so I am going to bite the bullet and talk to her about gundog training

Please cross all your fingers, paws and toes that she doesn't laugh us off the premises

And that I don't chicken out totally and end up not mentioning it

I think she might try to channel me into one of her classes - she was trying to talk me into Agility on the phone

But she is supposed to be good so we'll see how it goes

If this fails, it's back to the drawing board, I might just find a Gundog Club course and try that out, give Grade One a go

ETA actually I don't know if it's fair to say she was trying to talk me into it, but she wasn't too interested in talking about gundog stuff, put it that way.

Hopefully it was because when you talked to her that time, you had a dog with a recall problem, which to me doesn't seem that suitable for a gun dog, not that it would not cause a problem for an agility dog but I imagine it is less of a problem.

After all, the obstacles sort of stands where they are put, so it is not as if the dog will disappear into the sunset chasing an agility obstacle.

Either way, good luck.

Good luck! And don't lose heart if she doesn't think you guys are suited to gundog training, you can always get a second opinion or keep plugging away.

I was told I would never 'get it (aggression) of of him' B by a very experienced PD trainer and I was laughed at when I said I was going to do the BH with him

and that day he was one of the first three ever showline bred dogs to pass in Ireland for many years.

I do realise he has limitations and it is unlikely he will ever take to protection work without having pressure put on him, which I am not prepared to do as he is a pet first and foremost, but he loves to follow his nose so we do tracking instead

Agility also requires recall, focus and being able to take direction, all disciplines are slightly different adaptations of natural drives, instinct and talent so I think it would be silly of her to discount gundog training for you both x

Would agree that if this trainer isn't interested then try and find another who is. A friend of mine had a pup from me from show lines (sire was a breed champion) with the intention of doing working trials with her. Quite a few people told her she was daft not getting working lines but the bitch qualified CD, UD & WD Ex and might have gone further if she had not been retired due to an injury.

Hope you're right Finny (hopefully Henry will remember his manners and not show me up hugely!)

I'll just play it by ear a bit and see what she says

Thank you for all the good luck wishes everyone
