When considering a horse to buy do you think it's ok to ask current owner if you can have previous ownder's details and contact them for information? Particularly if they haven't had the pony long (18 mths in this case)
Yes, worth asking, they may be offended, but then if there is nothing to hide they should be ok about it!
Also is the rider in a pony club? It is acceptable to ask for a reference from the DC and Chief Instructor of their branch, I rang both up before I bought our first pony, so not much different to asking for previous owner.
i am in this situation - the problem lies in if you get a lot of people asking to contact them i dont think its fair especially as with my horse it was bred by a stud and they get loads of calls. if someone is serious its fine but everyone asks it seems on first viewings!
All our ponies are in their first homes since we sold them, I dread losing contact and would hope to be told where they have gone/ would love to be in contact with new owners
if the horse has a passport previous and breeders contact details should be available in there. All my guy's passports have all previous owners details in there.
A friend has just done this .She bought the horse but rang previous owner as current owner was overhorsed and frightened.Turned out the poor lad had been beaten in his first home and the lady gave her some really usefull info on him. Everyone is happy including the new horse who is gaining trust and confidence every day.
