Hi There,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this situation. I have read it is common especially in high withered TB types. I am upset about the situation as I do not want my horse sore and was only trying to keep him warm in the awful cold winter we are having.

I have a 10yo TB gelding standing at 16.1. I have recently noticed some rubbing at the highest point of his withers in front of where the saddle and saddle pad is which is why I do not think it is due to the saddle. when I touch this area it is clearly sore and the hair has started to come out and a scab is flaking off revealing a pink patch of sore skin. He has rubs on his chest which I believe where down to a so called anti tub masta bib which is now removed and I apply cornocresin (spelling?) to grow the hair back which is fab! The sore on his withers I have applied a antibacterial spray and sudocream and padded it with an anamalintex and vet wrap until my lycra vest comes which I will tack sheep skin to the wither part so it can go under any rug.

The problem I am now having is after reading which rugs may prevent this. I only have combo's. He has been wearing a medium weight WB and a Heavy weight Funnell rug when it is extremely cold both with necks. Can anyone else suggest a better rug or any ideas how I can prevent this in the future. Also any healing remedies? I am trying to let air to it but he is clipped also, so no rug is impossible as I do not want him to get cold but equally don't want the rubbing to continue.. Tricky??

Many Thanks for your suggestions :)

I had the same problem with mine in every kind of rug apart from Rambo Wug. they were expensive but totally stopped any horrible rubbing.

I had same problem with mine from a stable rug, luckily I noticed before it went raw, its one that had sheepskin there, so I've since changed it to one that is nylon lined in that area and no sheepskin. The fit of the rug could also be looked at, I too like weatherbeeta and amigo ranges, don't like masta since they changed the design good few years back. I also bought a gallop rug for the first time last year and its lovely fit
