Help!! We are at our wits end! Had our geldings teeth done, had the Physio check him over and had his back done. Had saddle readjusted and have trotted him in front of the farrier and the vet and everyone at the yard! He is definitely not lame and all other things are grand. When my daughter rides him he does this silly skipping thing. We cleaned up his bit and rested him then when she rode him last Saturday he went great. She even jumped him and it was fine. Gets on today and all he did was mess about. Bucking skipping firing his head about all over the place and not coming into the contact at all! We have moved him home with us so he is adjusting to a new environment and granted she was on him on the field and the flies were bad. Could he have a sore mouth ??? Eating fine and we trotted him up afterwards and he was sound. Anyone any ideas?????? Please?????
 
He's just playing up, My mare was moved in September from home with a small riding field to a huge field with a huge riding field - So has only stopped being an ass though it was too wet until about April/May time. Think about it, he has probably been ridden in an arena, right? You are now expecting him to behave in a field. ;) Not going to work. :)
 
He can be a bit of an arse (excuse language) at times but also before when he was sore he did some bucking and messing. All things have been checked but I would feel so guilty if we were missing something! The head throwing just makes me want to think he doesn't want to work!! I hope!!
 
Did your physio check his sacroiliac my boy was never lame and fortunately didnt buck but head shaking and evasion was in his repatoir he wasnt naughty but was trying to tell me something.
 
That's what makes me think he is trying to tell us something. No Physio never mentioned that but it may be worth looking at.
 
He is a 16.2 cob and his grass is good at min. We have brought him in more though as he is getting too fat. He copes ok on his own and we have him out with some sheep for company since we moved him.
 
He was out on Tuesday as well and had a good canter around the fields. Seemed grand then part from what we thought was a very excited buck. He does need worked regularly and always has!

Age has nothing to do with ulcers.

Have you checked the browband is big enough and the bit wide enough plus is not so high its jammed up against his back teeth? If he's had the bridle a few years then at his age its possible his head has grown a little.
 
Yeah we checked his bridle and his bit is fine as well though I will have another look at it to double check. He isn't showing any of the ulcer signs ie girth issues losing weight etc. might have chat with dentist and see what she thinks. His teeth were done end of May. We have looked in his mouth but nothing is obvious to me. But the issue seems to raise it's head as soon as contact is put on.
 
I agree, it might just have been the flies. Ours have been driven demented by them on occasion.

The only other thing is maybe he is missing equine company...?
 
Lol that's what I am hoping. He can be a stroppy big git at times. And when he doesn't want to work he will let u know! My daughter is lunging him with side reins this morning so will see how he behaves on lunge!
