According to http://www.metafilter.com/62922/Double-Muscle-Mutants it is caused by a myostatin mutation so is probably unrelated but it just struck me as odd that having one copy of the mutant gene makes for faster sprinters which is what AQHs were bred for.

I wonder if the US version of the RSPCA would be interested in the stud owners purposely breeding in a potentially fatal defect.

If a horse is H/H (homozygous) for HYPP then it WILL pass the defective gene on. If it's N/H then it has a 50% chance of passing it on. So not worth the risk, is it?
 
Looking around their website it seems that most of the horses they produce are of the same stamp as Kid's Classic Style, so I'm not sure whether they guarantee HYPP or not! If they guarantee not then they seem to have been breeding the opposite. Grossly deformed is hat I would call that particular look.

Its a major problem with breeding the AQHA's - LOADS of them have the genetic defect HYPP. The N/H means that one gene carries the fatal defect, one doesn't, H/H means its guaranteed to pass it on, and N/N means its negative. Its a muscular problem which means they have a build up of some substance [can't remember which one :S] and it causes horrific attacks where they have fits. They also breed the horrible fat thing, it isn't overweight its the build, even the foals have it. The conformation that wins these classes is digusting >:(

"This heritable disease is caused by a genetic defect that has been found through research to trace back to the great Quarter Horse stallion, Impressive. HyPP affects the sodium channels of afflicted horses and overloads the system with high potassium levels that cause episodes which may include: mild muscle twitching that is undetectable to the human eye; noticeable muscle twitching; "crawling" skin, ranging from slight to very noticeable and usually from the back flank area forward; hind quarter paralysis; excessive yawning; and paralysis of the muscles surrounding the heart and/or lungs, causing death due to heart attack or suffocation. Note: Not all horses affected with HyPP will show outward signs and will live full productive lives, but as can be seen in our feature stories and on our experience pages, a great many do suffer episodes and some die. How many of the latter are ENOUGH to make breeders and the registries realize that something needs to be done about N/H as well as H/H?"

"There are three testing statuses for HyPP:
H/H - This status means that a horse carries a double copy of the defective gene and will pass at least one copy of the gene and the disease to 100% of it's offspring.
N/H - This status means that the horse carries one normal gene and one HyPP gene and will pass the gene and the disease, on average, to 50% of it's offspring. some
N/N - This status means that the horse carries two normal genes. It does not have the disease, nor can it be passed on."

Ive seen this one before - the first stallion is just horrendous...only the sickest of people could find that remotely attractive in a stallion.
 
I know. Its just horrific - I've never been a fan of belgium blue cows because of the sheer amount of muscle. I think of AQHA horses as the equine equivalent, and they're revolting! More to the point you can never actually compete them in any normal equestrian discipline because they wouldn't be able to cope! The point of it is just beyond me! lol
 
going to stick my neck on the line here there are probably a few halter horses out there who look similar to this mayb not as extreme that dont have the gene. The horse is muscle rather than fat and to be honest i have seen a lot of native ponies over here that are obese that look worse than this horse.Difference being that are horses are overfed is that not just as cruel.I also think that if people have never seen a halter horse this is going to be their first reaction because they have had nothing to compare it to
