I want to start my 4yo...but she has wolf teeth.
Do I really have to have them removed?
I am worrried for her, as she is so frightened of vets

Thoughts/ideas please?

Dont get the shoddy person who removed mine (before I had him) with the wrong end of a claw hammer! Poor pony hates dentists with a passion now!

Who was that? Can you PM me with the name, please?
I was going to get VictoriaEDT to do it...but of course it would necessitate a vet visit...and my poor girl is very frightened.

My horse had wolf teeth as a youngster, and dentist suggested we wait and see how she went. Once she was broken, she wasn't bad in her mouth, just a little bit sensitive and not always taking a positive contact. Finally, took the plunge and had them removed by the vet - and I definitely noticed a big improvement in her acceptance of the bit after that.

We had 2 removed yesterday from our 7yo mare. It took about 1/2 hour for the vet (also qual EDT) to do it, under sedation, lots of wiggling required, but they came out in the end. There was about 1cm showing with another 3cm root. It would have been a lot easier all round if they had been removed earlier.

Removed on vets advice, I think/hope there will be an improvement, there has been resistance from her when my daughter takes up a contact. She has to have 2 days off completely then no bit in for a week at least.

Little mare seems fine today, not out of sorts at all.

From what I've managed to find out, I think you would probably be better having them taken out now before you start her.

Ive seen them taken out with no sedation and no problem!....Quite amazing really!! Especially as I nearly passed out when asked to 'hit the mallet'!!!

Have no idea, when I bought him they told me he had had them removed and then proceeded to tell me how, I was shocked to say the least! The problems of not having to be qualified to call yourself a horse dentist!
Lcky my dentist now says that she thinks they managed to get all of it out, but getting his teeth done is a nightmare, he has to be twitched and I have to cling on to his head for grim death, whilst he flings me round the stable!
Normally twitching him knocks him out, hes had joint injections with jut a twitch, but doing his teeth it doesnt touch him!!

Thanks for your replies - PennyJ, and TGM - I know they really need to come out...she is so frightened of vets she stands and shakes...

In her defence, she is quite polite and wouldn't dream of kicking/striking/biting...but her heart rate is through the roof...and she's so anxious.
She had colic surgery, you see

I suppose I'll just have to bite the bullet and get it done...or ride in a Hackamore for ever, lol.

I was told not to bother having them taken out unless they caused a problem. She's 8 now and they haven't caused a problem yet!

My youngster had his out a couple of months ago. Vet thought they were quite sharp so I wanted them out before he was even bitted. He was very well sedated and I don't believe he remembers anything about it. I was worried he would be sensitive about his head afterwards but he was all healed up in a week or so and has since been bitted without batting an eyelid. I'm glad I had it done before he had problems.

Hope that is some help.

Yup definitely get them out before doing any work with her. Get the vet to sedate her befor the dentsit even starts work. If she is that bad with the vet, maybe give her some sedalin before the vet arrives?

Our vet who is head equine vet at Royal Vet College says dont take them out unless they are causing a problem. Thats good enough for me! so I didnt and mare is now 5 and has never had any discomfort.

Do you have reason to think they will cause a problem? Both my vet and dentist said to leave Chancer and see what happens as often they don't give problems.

Dentist actually said he thought the way Chancer's new fangs were coming through they would push the wolf teeth out - and one has come out - vet gave it a wriggle as it was loose when having a look at him for his annual MOT and out it popped - no need for tools or sedation

Other is in place but not doing any harm so will leave things.

Have to confess when I saw the little lump of a wolf tooth was rather unimpressed - was expecting a big fang that I could make into a necklace to go with my wisdom teeth that are being saved for earrings. OH thinks I am a little weird.

I think they will cause problems as she is a chunky girl, with chunky teeth

And I agree with your OH - you are more than a little weird.

Cairo still has his - and they don't come more chunky.

If you are seriously concerned, then sounds like lots of dope and out they come. Could the vet give you something to give her before they turn up to have her calm and then top up when they arrive to do the deed?

We used to inject a pony that was a nightmare to clip - vet gave us a syringe and we stuck it in his bum - took longer to work but did kick in and then we both went at him with two sets of clippers before he woke up - did this twice a year - full clip and life was easy. Vet was happy to allow us to kick up syringe of sleepy stuff as he knew the pony well.

Anyway hope it all turns out - I thought you might have liked the idea of fang necklaces and earring.
