Had my new 4yr olds teeth done today only had him 2 weeks and planned to send him on thursday for breaking but he has a wolf tooth which is being removed on friday and then hes having 2 weeks off.

The vets have said he should have had two tetnus jabs before he has a tooth removed but the could give him one that goes under the skin.

I dont really want to wait 4 weeks before he can have the teeth taken out as that would mean 6 weeks off in total before he can be broken in by which point we will be at the end of the summer . has anybody else had experiences with tenus jabs and wolf teeth.

Should mension he had been gelded at some point in his life so guessing he has had a tetnus then.

All advice welcome thanks

When my youngster was castrated he hadn't started his jabs so he had one on the day. I don't think it counted towrds his proper jabs, he had to have them afterwards, but it was 3 years ago and my memory is awful. I should think they could do something like that?

Had my boys wolf teeth done last year. He had two. He hasn't had a tetanus jab at all when he had them done according to his passport although he had also been gelded. My vet just did both at the same time.

Oh I'm feeling a bit better now they made it sound like I was doing something really bad but I thought to wait 4 weeks till he had both jabs then another two before he could go to be broken then another 6 to be broken thats 12 weeks in total . The summer would be gone :(

When I had Ben gelded he had a tetanus but it wasn't followed up:o, Then last year he had his WT out, had first jab, went to be backed two weeks later and I had the vets do his second jab at the place he was being 'broken in'

Our neighbour did this, the following year the horse contracted tetanus and I really would not wish that on any horse! He was PTS aged 3, as despite the vet doing as much as possible it was not enough. Provided the first jab has been given-this should give enough protection for wolf teeth removal, but do make sure you follow up with the second jab when it is due.

You can get the tetanus antitoxin which works straight away, but only lasts limited time. Vets will probably suggest starting the tetanus vaccination at the same time for longer protection. Tetanus does kill and is a relatively cheap thing to protect against!

so as long as a get the jab when I have the tooth taken out it will be fine?

Does he have to have his wolf teeth out yet? My sisters mare has one come through and the vet is very much of the opinion not to take it out unless it causes issues with the bit, which it hasn't yet.

I'm not saying its advisable, I had every intention of following it up but was very ill and unable to get vets out as a result. I agree that in an ideal world the it would have been followed up :)

There were two dentist there who both recommended it coming out cause it was so big, they also said it would take at least 10 days to heal :(

I have every intention of following it up i'm guessing she didn't do it every year?

I bought my 3yo recently without any jabs. Had the first one done by the vet after successful vetting (paranoid) and a month later got the vet back to do second jab and remove a wolf tooth. The vet gave second jab and tetanus antitoxin since she was removing the wolf tooth before immunisation was complete.
