Wolf Teeth

can anyone talk me through having wolf teeth taken out - aftercare, etc... is it ok to do so just before (i.e. only a few weeks before) a horse travels?

possible things which can go wrong?

Bloss has four days off after having hers out, after that gentle hacking for a couple of days. She was on bute for 5 days too. I cant remember much more as it was about 2 years ago, but i think after about 2weeks she was totally bk to normal. Id ask you vet/dentist to be honest.
 
My daughters horse had hers out last year. Some dentists take them out without sedation but I had her sedated by the vet. I'm really glad I did because there was a lot of blood and quite a bit of wrenching before they came out.

She had a week off and then she was gently ridden for a week after that.
 
The youngster I used to have had his out under sedation. He had no medication afterwards and was hacking out 3 days after wards in a happy mouth bit.

I think recovery really depends how difficult it is for the vet to get them out.

My mare had a week off after her wolf teeth were taken out as they were difficult to extract. Vet gave her some bute to ease the soreness but apart from that no aftercare was needed. I can't see any reason why a horse should have a problem being transported a week or so afterwards, but if you are worried why not phone your vet and ask their advice.
 
Spirit had his taken out last year, under sedation. I was amazed how quick and easy it was - he has 2 days off and then was back to being longreined (was only 2)
There was no blood, no mess and no aftercare needed. Very straight forward and whole thing took about 5mins!!
 
It depends on how big the teeth are and how deep the root goes, Dancer had his out under sedation, I gave him a week off, and just flushed his mouth out with a large syringe filled with warm salty water twice a day. I rode him in a head collar with the reins from my bridle attatched for a week after that and every thing back to normal after that. We took him to the vet. about a half hour journey and travelled him back after the sedation had worn off with no problems whatsoever. Good luck.
 
Charlie had his out while he was being gelded. He was knocked out. The teeth came right out easilly. And withing 2 or 3 days he was his old self again.....I think the gelding was more sore than the teeth though;)
 
The only risk I have ever encountered with wolf teeth is that there is an artery running just below them wich can get damaged in the pull(very bloody mess) For aftercare I have found an ordinary human mouthwash seryngrd in the mouth once a day for a few days normally does the trick
